What do you do when you see a coin you already have

Same date for example, similar or closely graded to the one you already have. You love the one you have and feel no need to replace it. The coin you're seeing now, is an incredible example, and it's hard to find, VERY hard to find incredible examples...

Do you buy it?

I would, if it's that hard to find. Then maybe you could pass it on to somebody you know who does need it.

If it was worth buying the first time, then I'd do it a 2nd and 3rd if the funds allowed.

If there weren't other coins I needed that I liked as much, yeah, I might buy it. Or I might save my money to bag a bigger elephant later.

If it was a favorite, tough to find date I could easily afford, I'd buy it. If I had to think about whether I could afford another prized coin just like it, I would weigh the opportunity cost and think about favorite coins I do not yet own.

I'd buy it and after sitting on it for a while I'd sell the least favorite of the two I owned.

It would really depend on the cost of this coin.....

If it was not expensive and I really liked it why not, this is for the enjoyment isn't it?

Sure-why let it get away---you dont have to limit yourself to one example. (pretty soon you will be collecting by die variety then die state and have many many examples of the same coin--well-sort of?)image

And if I paid too much for one and less for the other, I rationalize it as "cost averaging". image

My collection is based upon having multiple, high grade examples of the same date coin. It's not hoarding, it's selective collecting.

I've already done it several times. Each time, though, I have ended up getting rid of one of the duplicates to get something else.
