ANACS missed the boat. Keep or throw back?

Picked up a British Penny, 1831, in an ANACS EF45 holder for $96 net on Ebay, which had it been a legitimate EF45, wouldn't be a bad deal.

I think ANACS screwed the pooch. Too much wear on the hair, a hit on the base of the bust (you can't really see it in the pics), and a few rim nicks. I'd give it a VF35 most likely.

I contacted the seller about returning the coin, and he's amenable to doing a full refund minus S&H (he said that he agrees that ANACS overgraded it and that I'm the second person wanting to return the coin).

But he also tossed out this option: Keep the coin for $50 and he'd refund the difference.

What do you think? Keep for half price, or return? Pics below.

William IV 1d is tough in high circ grades. 45 is optimistic. The sad thing is one must look at the coin and determine what is fair price wise because there is a big spread for nice examples. Having said that 50 is fair... but most collectors like this series in alittle higher grade.

I think he made a reasonable offer to refund half - you wouldn't get that from most sellers. I would personally take him up on the offer.

I can only speak for myself, but I would take the $50 deal.

Ergf. Reading my original post, I may have given the wrong impression... that the seller was ONLY offering for me to keep the coin for $50.

No, the seller offered two options:

    1. Return the coin for full refund minus S&H

    2. Keep the coin and get a $43 refund

The question is "Is the coin worth keeping for $53 net, given that it's a high-end VF rather than an XF?"

I really need to start paying attention to what I type... image

Return. Was there an image of the coin in the eBay listing?

Yes, but they were small and dark.

Think about the coin, itself. It's a VF35, in your opinion. Do you like it?? Is a VF35 acceptable in your collection (or are you trying to build an XF set?). If you can get past this, and like the coin on it's own merits, then you need to decide if $50 is a fair price that you are willing to pay for it. Once you get past that, then crack it out, and be happy with a raw coin in VF that you paid a fair price for.

It all really depends on whether you like the coin, and you think it's worth $50 image

Hmm, that is verdigris on the coin which is trouble in stabilizing. I agree with the previous comments - if this coin fits keep it, otherwise early football season and punt!

Maybe not the most eye appealing but looks very original to me. ANACS used to reward originality. I guess because they put them under a microscope, unlike the other TPGS. Or that's my understanding of how the old ANACS worked anyway. Have no idea what the new ANACS is like. Haven't submitted anything to them myself in quite a while.

  • You could try to take ANACS up on their Guarantee. If it regrades lower, then they are supposed to compensate you in some way. I've never actually read about anybody trying to this - it could just end up costing you more money.

I've sent a 2005 Satin Finish WJ nickels into ANACS for grading -- several different batches, both before and after the move. Since it was the same type/date/mint of coin over and over again, it was pretty easy to judge the concistancy in their grading. IMO, they seem to have tightened up on their grades since the move. Nickels that were grading MS68/MS67 9 months ago are now coming back MS67/MS66. I don't know if that is a trend, or the luck of the draw for the what grader I got. But if they are grading tighter now, then a resubmit of that coin might be worth it, especially if you have some other coins to submit at the same time.

I returned the coin today, and thanked the seller for his offer. What others mentioned was correct -- it would have stuck out, since I'm trying to keep my British material at XF/AU or better...
