Bought my FIRST AU gold coin

jpkinlajpkinla Posts: 822 ✭✭✭
I finally bought my first AU coin. In collecting the Type 3 $20 Libs in high quality, some of the dates are simply unobtainable in mint state. My entire gold collection is comprised of gem quality gold coins and as a result I have been spoiled looking at gem Saints, Indians and Libs.

I managed to find a 1881 and 1882 $20 in Mint state but have acquired a AU55 1886 housed in a older green PCGS holder. When you compare this coin to a real gem, it looks like the coin has been run over by a truck and it is hard to get excited until I realize only 500 or so were minted! The pop is 4 with only 5 graded higher....

It is difficult to overcome but AU coins just don't excite me like a gem gold coin does.....I kind of like my Miss Liberty to be uncirculated!! Don't you?

Especially when they look like that! Looks better than some $20 Lib 64s I have. Maybe she should spend a week or two in Newport Beach?
  • Actually I prefer the look of a little wear, ever notice how you hardly ever see a "fair" or "good" gold coin in a third party holder? I guess people just keep them for bullion when they get to that point.

I suspect this coin might come back as a 58 with the CC mint mark, though I'll bet it would easily make 62 if it had no mintmark.

I have been known to, on occasion, buy an AU gold coin.

jpkinla: I also like AU-58 Gold, especially when it's got a Carson City mintmark like this one... image

Very nice, but what do i know about goldimageimage
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
  • I like AU55 gold a lot more than AU58. Usually AU58's are really chattery and banged up. AU55 gold is a little more evened out both contact mark wise and color wise.

    Nice pickup!
