If the Tigers trade Thames and Miner for Abreau, they're stupid!!!

Abreu is decent and all, but Thames has shown great ability in few chances and Miner looks very solid. In 8 games he has went 6 and 2 with a 3.30 ERA and 1 CG.

Abreu = Games (91) AB (312) Runs (60) Hits (90) 2B (24) 3B (2) HR (8) RBI (64) SB (20) BA (.288) OBP (.438) SLG (.455)

Thames = Games (66) AB (220) Runs (42) Hits (65) 2B (17) 3B (1) HR (19) RBI (43) SB (1) BA (.295) OBP (.368) SLG (.641)

They could use a left-handed batter, but I feel this is too much to give up... Back to giving up solid prospects for a quick fix (Doyle for Smoltz).

    maybe Detroit is thinking this is THE YEAR and Abreu would seal the deal?

    That's what they thought about Alexander/Smoltz and look where that got them.... Abreu is not the missing link, although he does look like the missing link image

  • Thames isn't a young buck--he's 29. This is really the only good season he's had. Granted, Abreu is older...I think the real key here is Miner. A good young arm like that doesn't come along too often, and when you look at all the arms the Tigers have (Verlander/Robertson/Bonderman/Zumaya) the Tigers have the potential of building a Braves like rotation that we saw in the 90's. Giving up an arm at this time could be disasterous for the Tigers long term success.
    Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
  • I would hate to see Thames go after finally getting a shot this year, thanks to Dmitri Young. But Thames is up there in age, as well as Abreu, but Abreu brings much more to the table, he knocks more runners in, steals bases, and for much of his career, bats .300+. And the Tigers do need a left handed stick in the line up that has some pop, and I really do not want to see Dmitri Young come back and ruin the chemistry the Tigers have had all year long. Do not know much about it, heard it on the radio this past weekend, but apparently, an anonymous Tiger player emailed a sportswriter, basically saying that they do not want Dmitri Young back on the team, and if he was back, how can you put Thames back on the bench, after the way he has produced. And, if Young comes back and sits on the bench himself, do you think he would be happy about it? I still am uncertain about dealing ANY pitcher on the Tiger staff, I know one would have to probably be in a deal, but hopefully they will stick with minor league talent, but I have faith in Dave Dombrowski, he knows the game!

    No, Thames is not a spring chicken but he is still young enough to produce for up to another 10 years if he continues. Miner has looked great and pitching is a premium over any decent left handed hitter. Miner could also be around for quite a while, and certainly longer than Abreu. I hate when teams trade away solid prospects that could be a staple of their future, all for a one-year fix than usually doesn't pay off anyways.
    Detroit is currently in first, so apparently something has been working this year. A left-handed hitter would certainly help, but Abreu isn't the guy I would deal these 2 (Thames & Miner) for.

    I'm happy Detroit is in a position to actually discuss bringing in players to help them at the deadline instead of moving guys to give them contract relief, but I hope the organization doesn't make a move that could cost them in the future. Further, they're not even in the post season yet. I'm always afraid disruption within the team may topple the applecart. In the end, everyone knows Detroit will only go as far as their pitching can take them. Miner has been a pleasant surprise thus far since Maroth went down, certainly better than most expected. I just don't see the transaction as being advantageous enough to pull the trigger. Who knows?

    Bankrolling young talent for someone to spend the rest of the year here, and that is it, is what scares me. Under no circumstances would I even discuss any trade that would involve Verlander or Zumaya, one is going to be an ace, and the other the next closer. I would not like to see Miner go either, but if we can get a Soriano for instance, and get at least a 5 year deal with him, then I would find that acceptable, but only if he can be signed for a long term deal. Thames is a great guy, bided his time for so long, and is finally getting a shot, and it is wonderful to see him succeed, but I would take a Soriano or Abreu over him. With all the losing the Tigers have done over the past 1 1/2 decades, they have stacked the minors with great talent, and that is a great sign for the future of this team. But for one year, bankrolling the future, at least to myself, is NOT an option. I feel the Tigers are going to have a solid team for the next decade to come!!!

    Well if it were just Thames we were talking about, I too think my outlook would be different but it isn't just Thames. Miner may end up being a dead arm, but now his future looks promising and I wouldn't trade him alone for Abreu. Stellar pitchers are hard to come by and he has looked very good to this point. Soriano would be a nice addition "to the lineup", but not sure how he would be as a teammate. His start at Washington was rocky and the Tigers don't need that kind of thing to happen at this point in the season as it could disrupt the chemistry they seem to have established. I understand every teams desire to improve if possible before the playoffs, but it always seems odd that the team with the best record seeks to trade off good talent for a hopeful quick fix when they are already playing better than anyone to that point.

    In the end, I just really hope that the Tigers really consider their future as well when they contemplate making a deal for this season. I do agree that if they trade players, they better get the player they are getting to agree to an extension before making the trade. Otherwise it's all for not if they don't win it all this year. In the end, I really think it would be great to see them make it to the playoffs with their current team. They have all contributed greatly and I always hate to see teams dump their players late as it just appears that they are ungrateful to what those players did for them. I know, it's a business first... No perfect world here. Keep moving folks, nothing to see image

  • The Tigers have players on the squad now, and some in the minors, that makes the organization an apparent force for the future. Thames and Miner, I can deal with them going, ONLY if the player acquired sticks around for more than this season, but I do not hear much here in Detroit about them. I keep hearing Verlander, Zumaya, Sanchez, etc, etc, all the young stars that are the future of this team. Verlander and Zumaya, in my book, are hands off! The Soriano deal in Washington was the GM's fault, but Soriano, whether he still hates it or not, is doing his job, and doing it well. We shall see how it pans out!!!
  • I doubt Soriano would sign any new deal if he is traded. He's a free agent at the end of the season and he and his agent know he will be highly sought after. Soriano will end up going to whoever gives him the most money. I'm sure Detroit could, but it is too much of a gamble right now. No reason to rent a player (even of his caliber) if you have to sacrifice a few young studs...Abreu is a different story--doesn't he still have two years remaining on his deal?

    If I heard correctly, Abreu gets 16 mill next year and a 17 mill club option for 2008. Abreu can do a lot of things well. He's a very good hitter who gets on base a lot and can steal a decent amount of bases. But I can't say I feel he's worth that much by the league standards. Some may disagree, but that just seems pretty steep to me. It's not that I don't feel he would be a nice addition because he would be a big help to a free-swinging team like the Tigers, but again I think the players mentioned (and his contract) are too much for him.

    As a Tiger fan who follows the stuff very closely, I think they would be insane not to make the deal (if it exists) to get Abreu in here for a minimal cost.

    Thames is a journeyman minor-leaguer who is having a break out season, but he is not and will never be the same calibur player as Abreu.

    Miner was picked up in the Farnsworth deal last season from Atlanta - he's gotten knocked around in the minors before, and he's pitching way over his head right now - I'd deal him in a heartbeat to improve the team. The value of both of these players will never be higher.

    Additionally, Abreu is not a 2-month rental like Soriano would be. He's signed through 2007 ($15M) with a club option for 2008 ($16M or $2M buyout), which he will likely insist gets picked up if he is to waive his no-trade clause, and he probably would take a trade to a contender.

    Abreau is a fat pig man and he is overpaid. I guess what more could you want
  • A761506, well said! Miner is not a 3.30 ERA Major League pitcher, he simply is not(especially in the AL). Thames is an interesting hitter, who has finally gotten a chance, though he is no Abreu. Abreu is an on base machine, and has been consitently. His power seems to go on and off, though even when off, it is still respectable. Add the fact that he is a left handed bat, and that goes a long way in diversifying the Tigers lineup come playoff time when managers play match up game.

    Any owner in the Tigers situation that worries about salary, is stupid. That money will pay for itself three times over if they go far in the playoffs. Simply don't resign him when his deal is up.
