Does this mean he will have to wait another 5 years before he is eligible for the HOF again?

Buck O'Neil draws 2 walks in Minor League All Star Game. He batted for both sides. Had a one day contract with one team and was traded during the game so he could bat for the other side. image

The 2nd pitch thrown to Buck was high and inside!

  • I'm all for bringing well-deserved and long-overlooked attention to the Negro Leagues but I don't think this is the way to do it. For years, the existing members of the NLs have strived to obtain respect, often walking a social tightrope to do so. This was a gimmick, a marketing ploy, that reduced the goal to a back-page clip.

The guy's 94. Does anyone here actually think he could have gotten out of the way of a pitch?

Isn't it great to see a player like Buck at the age of 94 swinging the bat?

Exclusion in sports, now long gone, was one of our darkest and most regrettable hours.

Let's give Buck a nice round of applause and let's all hope that we look that good at 94.

Heck, I had to crawl out of the bed today, and that's after getting up twice last nite to take a piss!

I don't have anything signed by Buck, that's why I was truly excited when I pulled this a couple of years ago.

BTW, this is not a HOF POV I'm making - probably just being sappy about the guys before my time who would've played for the sheer joy.

  • I got stuck listening to that idiot on ESPN Radio's overnight shift for a few minutes last night (WEEI goes off at 11) and actually heard them have a discussion as to which was a larger albatross over MLB's head ... racism (the NLs, not allowing black players to play, the abuse black players received after they were allowed in, etc.) or steroids.

    image

After going back and forth for a minute they decided that racism, indeed, was the larger problem.

Really? You sure? Do you need more time to think about it? They actually quantified the statement though, saying that steroids enhanced existing players while the racism prohibited certain players from even competing.

    Idiots.

    only 2x?

to answer the question regarding if Buck has to wait 5 yrs the answer is no.

It was discussed earlier if Rickey henderson had to wait after playing in the independent leagues and it was found that he did not.

That info can be found at the HOF site.

Good god this guy's been a goodwill ambassador of baseball for 70 years!! What the hell does he have to do to get in?

Xanadu, that's pretty funny. Just the other day, I was trying to decide what the bigger catastrophe was- the Holocaust or Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston breaking up.

The Wife (a doctor) got Bill "Ready" Cash's auto for me.

Yes, MLB suffered from racism as did a lot of our society. At least these guys are getting some of the recognition today that they deserved 50 years ago.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree with you more. I just think it's somewhat sad that it takes a gimmick like this to bring it back to the forefront.

After seeing that auto I bet it takes Buck 20 minutes to sign a card. He probably stops and takes a nap between Buck and O'Neil. I saw him on an outside the lines about the NL's and he was pretty outspoken about it. They will probably let him in the year after he dies.

  • Correct me if I am wrong since he was walked in his only plate appearance the AB does not count so therefore can he actually get credit for being in the game at least under the rules for scoring??

It's the same as Eddie Gaedel...Buck gets two plate appearances, but no at bats since he walked both times.

    Steve
  • I was not sure how that worked out, but had forgotten about Geadel

A person can get credit for a game played simply by being announced.

example. a pinch hitter is announced to bat for a starter. after being announced and before taking his place at the plate the opposing manager makes a pitching change. the pinch hitter to be is called back and another pinch hitter is sent up in his place. the original pinch hitter gets credit for being in the game and can't be used again. he basically was in the game yet never took his place in the field or at bat.
