What about toning on business strike Indians?

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,103 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently aquired a business strike Indian off of Ebay for a measly 14 bucks because the seller had a poor picture. When I opened the package, I was very pleasantly surprised. I'll admit, I'm no expert in doctored coins, but I would like to think I could spot most AT jobs. After reading the thread about toned proofs, I find myself second guessing all beautifully toned coins. Here is a photo of my 14 dollar toned Indian from Ebay. BTW, I did give this an acetone bath and nothing changed.

  • At the risk of dissin' ya......your's does look AT...Pretty though. See how the color seems to sheen on the surface? Like oil on water..On a NT..the color looks like its a part of the coin...and deep. For 14 bucks?...LOL Looks fine.

All these AT Indian threads made me remember I DO own an AT Indian myself that I bought for fun.

Look at how the colors wash right over the mottos and wreath. I looks like someone drew on it with a marker. That's AT.

The $14 coin--I'm not so sure.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
  • nice to see you on this side of the street. As I have stated on the other side of the street you did well for $14.00 NT or AT... I like the coin and it is pretty. One I would happily own.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I do not think this 1906 Indian is AT'd is this. Take a look at "ONE CENT" on the reverse, notice how the color in the fields around it are blue and purple, yet the letters themselves do not show any of the purple that is seen around them. I think this would be almost impossible to reproduce by an AT job. You would almost certainly see the color extending upon to the letters themselves. Also, notice how the highest point of the wreath where the bow is at is toned, but the very bottom of the coin below the wreath is not. I think this coin was most likely stored in some kind of paper for a long time, and where the paper contacted the coin you see heavy toning, where it did not, such as below the wreath you see very little.

Not really...people can do great things with liquid and q-tips.......I'll almost bet you the coin is AT.
  • Possibly AT

I'm sure it's difficult to tell from photos, but I will say one thing. The toning on this coin does not "float" on top of the coin but rather appears to be deeper or under the luster if that makes sense. I guess for 14 bucks, who really cares. I live close to Denver and will attend the ANA show there and show it to a few "experts" in the field and get their oppinion.

The coin may be AT and it may be NT, I can't say either with any sense of certainty. However, I will pass along a piece of advice I received some time ago -- "Don't buy anything but no-brainer NT coins", and this coin does not fit that bill....Mike
