Eckersley calls Mariano Rivera "best" ever

Since discussion about Rivera is so popular on here, I thought I would provide a link to this story:

With the possible exception of Hoyt Wilhelm - and this would be an apples/oranges comparison - Rivera is the best relief pitcher in history by such a large margin it is mind-boggling.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
  • I agree, no one has done it more times in the most pressure packed situations of all, playoffs and world series.
People may not like the yanks, and try to say he wouldn't have had the opportunity had he not played in New York, but its really in a large part because of his play that gave them the opportunity to get there, so he could have the opportunity to be the most dominant closer in postseason history.

No question Rivera is the best closer in MLB history. It's absolutely remarkable that he's been able to dominate for such an extended period of time when most closers crash and burn within a few seasons at most (Bobby Thigpen, anyone?). Even before he was the go-to guy, he was one of the main reasons the Yanks won the Series in 96 when he did such a fantastic job setting up for Wetteland.
