"Mariners making run at Soriano
Jul 17 - The Mariners are the latest team to make a run at Alfonso Soriano, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Their interest is serious enough that the Nationals have two scouts at Seattle's game in New York on Monday night, along with a third watching the Mariners' Triple-A team play in Tacoma.
The Nationals are asking for two can't-miss young players from all the teams bidding for Soriano. So their No. 1 target on the Mariners is believed to be 20-year-old centerfielder Adam Jones, a spectacular athlete who was originally a shortstop and once had a mid-90s fastball as a pitcher in high school.

"Adam Jones," said an official of one team that has been in constant contact with Nationals GM Jim Bowden, "is definitely Jim's type of player."

The Nationals and Dodgers are also involved in serious talks involving Soriano, reports ESPN.com and Scouts Inc.'s Keith Law.

Law reports the Dodgers are making Joel Guzman, 21, available in a potential trade. Guzman, who played in the Futures Game in Pittsburgh, was a shortstop whom the Dodgers have converted to the outfield.

Bowden will send one of his top lieutenants (thought to be Bob Boone) to Tacoma to see Guzman play for Triple-A Las Vegas this week."

Would love to see Soriano take over the DH duties, as his defensive liabilities make him an ideal DH.

  • Soraino has the ability to be a very productive outfielder. He has a high amount of outfield assists this season, plus his speed in the outfield would always come in handy. Isn't the LF for the Mariners getting up there in age(34 maybe? I'm not sure exactly) but the fact is the Reds-Nats trade set a precedence on the market.

The Nats NEED pitching. They also NEED hitting. I think if another team can put up another bat as well as a young arm, I think the Nats will bite.

Truthfully though, I'd love for him to stay in DC! I was a fan of his when he was a Yankee, and the Yanks pulled an Arod in the trade with Texas, and then he found his way to DC. I'd really like for him to stay but I think it maybe a forgone conclusion to trade him; even though he's said he would love to sign and play for DC.
