Islanders fire Neil Smith, hire Garth Snow???

¿Que?

I know hockey's not the most popular sport on this board, but this is one of the most bizarre personnel moves I've ever seen, in any business. I feel really sorry for Islanders fans. To see how their once proud franchise has sunk to this level is nothing short of a tragedy. Charles Wang is certifiably an idiot.

For those who don't know, Garth Snow was the Isles' backup goaltender last year. How that qualifies him to be a General Manager of a struggling team is beyond me.

Yeah, they have a clue what they are doing ! Maybe they should have hired Isiah Thomas instead.

  • I guess Garth Snow must have won the Islanders' clubhouse fantasy hockey challenge this past season.

In all seriousness, it is baffling. Neil Smith was getting things done, signing players the Islanders needed. Adding Brendan Witt and Tom Poti to the defenseive line was a great improvement, and seasoned players like Chris Simon can only help. I guess Neil Smith must have rubbed Charles Wang the wrong way...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

How much power/sway does Bettman have here? Is it within his power to talk to this crazed Isles owner (and the equally screwed up Mike Milbury) to try and bring some stability and common sense to the situation. I mean Neil Smith is a compotent and experienced executive....Garth Snow has absolutely no credentials for the GM position at all....methinks he will Milbury's puppet....and Milbury is an idiot.

I actually thought this post was a joke until I went to ESPN. What a messed up situation. Hard to believe that 25 years ago the Islanders had just won the first of their four cups. I guess all that luck they used up in the early and mid 80's has caught up to them.
  • Charles Wang is making Harold Ballard look like a model owner. To his credit the always classy Pat Lafontaine resigned after hearing the news
