1970 Football...

Anyone ever strike-up any discussion about '70 football cards. I have quite a few mint cards from that year and am debating sending some of the nicest ones down for grading. Small sets are always attractive to me!
There are two types of people in this world; those who like Neil Diamond, and those who don't. My ex-wife loves him!!

  • One of the best of the 70s, 1970 has great player selection size and value. Love the design also.

Topps printed an average amount that year and the cards were produced well, a PSA 8 set is very possible in a short amount of time, and a PSA 9 set would take a bit longer but the population is there. Cards come out particulaly crisp from wax and it's also got a couple of really neat insert sets.

1970 is one of my favorites - good luck with your sub!

PSA 8's are very affordable($6-18) depends on player, etc and PSA 9's($20-40), again depends on player, etc. The stars are a different story. Good luck.

My favorite football set as well, including the series 2 glossy card inserts. 1970 cello packs are the first cards I can remember buying (born in 62).

I'm currently 3 cards short of having 3 complete sets although one set would be considered ex at best. My registry set(s) are named jmoran19, been grading HOFers, cards I pulled from a first series cello pack 3 years ago and nicely centered low population cards. I also have a graded wax pack and cello pack from each series. Obtaining a graded rack pack from 1970 is currently my white whale, have only seen 2 up for auction in the last few years, one with OJ on front.

Here are my latest grading results, #29 and #221 are low pop's:

    7 06389513 1970 TOPPS 29 GENE WASHINGTON N/A 8
    8 06389514 1970 TOPPS 80 FRAN TARKENTON N/A 8
    9 06389515 1970 TOPPS 180 JOHN UNITAS N/A 7
    10 06389516 1970 TOPPS 221 BILL MUNSON N/A 8
    11 06389517 1970 TOPPS 14 DAN ABRAMOWICZ SUPER GLOSSY 8
    12 06389518 1970 TOPPS 16 TOM WOODESHICK SUPER GLOSSY 8

I'll post a picture of my graded packs later, John.

Does anyone have a 1970 Claude Humphrey PSA 8 they'd be willing to sell? If so, please PM or e-mail me at montooth13@yahoo.com w/ scan and price.

I might be interested in any PSA 9 HOF rookie cards in you get any.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Here's some unopened 1970 wax packs. Note, on the series 1 wax packs the football seam is dark green. On the series 2 packs it is gray.

Definitely brings back great memories as this was the first year I started opening packs as a kid. I remember very well sitting on my bed very early Christmas morning in cold, snowy Upstate New York and opening 3 packs that were in my stocking. I know this set (which I managed to complete in the 80s) has been criticized (for lack of rookie stars and for it bland design) but like the 70 baseball set, nostalgia outweighs objectivity. I'm also glad there are others that like this set as well.

How much rarer are cards 133-263 in this set? It seems that most cards sold are in the first 132 cards and according to the pop report it looks like about 2 x as many are graded in the lower numbers as well. Also has anyone seen any sort or premium for the higher numbered cards?
    Thanks

    Steve,

Very nice memory...packs were always a great present, weren't they? I got a full box of '71-72 basketball one Christmas from a sister's boyfriend and thought I had won the lottery.

BTW, I have some nice 1970 Topps football PSA 8's and 9's up on eBay..closing tonight if any of you have holes to fill.

4SC has had a fair number of PSA 8s from this set for under $5 recently, and DSL brought more to the National for low prices (I picked up several from them there, including Steve DeLong, who is a low pop [12 PSA 8, 3 PSA 9]). Between them and other sellers, there's no reason to pay over $5 for any high-pop common.

Nick, If you are selling PSA 9's for $5, I'll back up the truck. Let me know. I don't think you can afford to sell PSA 9's for $5, not even higher pop commons.
  • Speaking of 9's, if anyone has one of the #173 Sweeney 9's available I'd be very interested to hear from them as well as a #118 Redman in 10.
