Started collecting coins -- Lincoln cents from pocket change -- at the age of eight in 1954 (yes, I'm a 60-year old Baby Boomer this year), stopped collecting around my sophmore year in high school when I realized you could spend money on other rarities and gems. I became a Reborn Numismatist in 1975 when I realized the Mint's proof sets I'd purchased years earlier for less than $3 a set were being sold for $25 each.

Started collecting since 1984 (when my uncle brought back some currency and coins from Canada) - but I started to appricate coins because while growing up in Kankakee, IL (back in the 80's) there was a coin shop owned by a husband and wife team - the husband sold coins, the wife sold used novels. My sister would go to the novels, I would go to the coins. The coin shop on no longer there (husband and wife moved to Florida) and the building that it used to stand on is now a Walgreens.

Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
Since 1969 when I filled my first Whitman Liberty Nickel album. I was always on the lookout for the 1913 but never found one. I remember hoarding the pre 64 silver coins and putting them in my shoe box. Those were the days when you could still find silver in your change. Great thread ABC123
I started collecting at age 7 filling Whitman Lincoln, Buffaloes, and Mercs out of circulation. Some time off for cars, girls, college. Been collecting steady for 20 years, the last 10 years mostly bust coins.

The coolest thing is that I don't know the answer to this question. I've literally been collecting longer than I remember. But if I had to guess, I started at 5 or six, which puts me at 40 years in the game.

Started on Christmas day, 1959. ?????????? Me too Bill---i got the two whitman cent folders for Christmas. I was 8. But there were periods when i bought no coins because of high prices or no funds --one of them was from 1983-1992. I still considered my self a collector- but inactive for that time period....Bob
Started studying coins in Dec of 1966 at the age of five, started actually collecting coins in 1972 at the age of eleven and have collected continously with no breaks ever since. 34 years as a collector and coming up on 40 years as a numismatist.

Then took a break while in high school and started back shortly after in about 1988 or so. Collected on /off for several years though not serious.
Started back in 1997 by aquiring key-dates and have been at it ever since. Now I have been a part-time dealer for 1 1/2 years.

Wish I still had all of those coin folders I seriously worked on as a kid...
