Your division pursuer is playing your wildcard pursuer, who do you cheer for?

Coming into the weekend, the Detroit Tigers had a 2.5 game lead in the division over the White Sox and an 8.5 game lead over the Yankees in the wildcard chase (should the White Sox overtake the Tigers).

It's a little late now, as the Yankees swept, but what would you rather have, a 4.5 game lead in the division and a 7.5 game lead in the wildcard, or a 2.5 game lead in the division and a 9.5 game lead in the wildcard? In other words, if your division rival wins, you are that much closer to clinching a playoff berth (I know, a long way to go).

Keep in mind, we're talking about the Tigers here. Typically 1st place is your goal, but after the last 15 years in Detroit, any playoff berth will do just fine.

I would worry about 1st place in your division all the way baby ..... don't even give the wild card a thought unless it is your teams only avenue left. image

Always worry about the division first at this stage in the season. If there were only 15 or 20 games to go then maybe positioning among the wild card hopefulls would come into play.
