Dark Indian Head (Buffalo)

I have a coin, but it really dark and I cannot make out a date (if there is one). Is there a safe way I can clean so I can maybe find the date?

How did I know? It's a "Type 1" Buffalo nickel which was only minted in 1913, the first year in the series. Type 1's can be identified by the design below the Buffalo. If he's standing on a mound, Type 1. If not, Type 2.

    Here is a Type 1

And here is a Type 2

  • Thank you so much Samika, I wish I had your knowledge of coins. I suppose considering the condition of this coin it has no more value than maybe a nickel? If that mauch. Thanks again.

It's probably worth at least a few dollars.

Not so. Any chance you can see a "D" or an "S" beneath FIVE CENTS on the reverse (as can be seen in the image of the Type 2 above)? If there is an "S", the coin is worth about $20.00. If there is a "D", the coin is worth about $5.00. If there is nothing visible, the coin is probably woth about $3.00.

IMPORTANT! DON'T CLEAN THE COIN! Leave it as is. image

The difference is the mound, Type1 has a solid/raised mound underneath the buffalo.

Type2 has a hollow, unraised mound under the buffalo.

Looks like it's made out of chocolate. Try taking a bite out of it.

Was this a metal detector find?
