If You Want to Ship Via UPS please read this

This past Friday I went to my local Office Depot to ship a parcel to canda via UPS
The girl asked me all kinds of typical questions regarding my parcel BUT
when she asked me for my social secirity # I told her NO way Jose!!!!
she told me the UPS software required it
Well when I told her like that will Never happen she
allegedly found a way around that

Has anyone else ran into this ridiculous situation?

No, because you can't insure coins with UPS, so there isn't much reason to use it. That said, I do have private insurance, but if I don't ship USPS (which is very, very rare) I ship DHL.

I don't have too much trouble with people/businesses that insist I give them my SS#, I have several made up numbers memorized and I just give them one of those.
  • If you provide the shipper with a bogus SS#; and then you make an insurance claim, do they provide you with a bogus reinbursement check ?

I only shipped with UPS once.

And it cost me $128 and change image

Anyone want to guess what I shipped?

Well, I'd only have a problem with that if I had to provide ID to prove who I was before they would give me the check. It is highly unlikely that they check with the Social Security Administration to make sure that the SS# and the name given match.

So all I need to do now is have a couple of fake ID's made up with the other numbers. Yes I know that is illegal, but I really don't care about that. (I also use different names and addresses as well.)

I am not so sure it is illegal to use a bogus SSN in business unrelated to the US gov't or US laws. The SSN is expressly not for identification. I know; that is on paper, not in practice. Unless they are asking for it to fulfill a federal reporting requirement or similar, giving them any random 9-digit number should be no worse than giving the supermarket a bogus phone number for a discount card. You arem't faking your identity. I'd love to see this legally tested.

No, it is creating the fake ID's that is the illegal part. Giving out phony SS#'s is legal as long as it isn't to someone who has to have it for reporting purposes to the IRS or SSA.

Yes, I am in complete agreement there. What woud be the interesting test would be the vendor, like UPS, who would dare deny a claim based on a phony SSN provided to them. The grey area is the credit industy which should never have gotten or used SSNs. It is impossible to unhinge them now there and is now the de facto identity number in the US for commerce.

    Some kind of conspiracy theorist?
I may like some privacy (I hate mail spam and telemarkets) but I don't need to go overboard with fake names and addresses......

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

When jerk-off operations ask for my social like that I just make one up out of the blue.
