Home Buy, Sell & Trade - Cards & Memorabilia

Open for suggestions

As many of you know, I have approx. 80,000 cards for sale on consignment. I have been putting them in the beckett data base then uploading them onto a website I created for this purpose. I want to get enough cards uploaded so collectors have a reasonable idea what is in the collection before I really try to sell it. This is the only place I have listed the collection so you guys and gals are the first ones to see it as it develops.

I am having a problem with size and page restrictions on a free website. I am currently using bravenet but they only allow 7 pages w/ 10,000 characters per page. The collection is so huge, it will take a long time to list all of them so I am trying not to pay for a full service website at this time.

Does anyone know where I can list these cards for all to see?
Also, am I out of line posting this collection and updates to it here? I am new to this and don't want to offend or upset anyone.

Here is an overview of what I have on Beckett;

Collection(s) Items Value
1991 Classic Best 117 $0.00
1991 Star Pics 113 $14.90
1992 DONRUSS 667 $91.75
Cal Ripken 229 $462.20
Chris Weber 31 $56.50
Dan Marino 199 $351.75
Emmitt Smith 125 $298.35
Jordan Baseball 132 $198.50
Jordan Basketball 164 $346.50
Nolan Ryan 189 $226.05
Older baseball cards 9 $27.00
Shaq O'Neal 102 $148.35

Thanks,
Alex

Alex, I'm hoping you're getting paid for your time and not just paid commissions. The cards you have listed are pretty much base cards and lower priced inserts from 10+ years ago. I think there's a whole lot of supply of those cards and not much demand.

If you're getting paid for your time, maybe pack up some of the "name" cards, set up at a local flea market with the plaques and things like that, and see what happens. Put the cards in a dollar box or a 2/$1 box or something, and see if you get any bites.

For most of the mid and later 90s cards, people broke an ungodly amount of boxes to get the rare chase and rookie cards. They sold the chase and rookie cards when they were red hot, to pay for the box and make a profit. If they had time they would put the base cards into sets or team sets and sell them at their stores or if they didn't have a store they would sell/trade to the stores.

The base cards ended up with a price guide value, then they were almost always sold for "half beckett" or less.

From what I've seen of your collection, you have a lot of the base and lower-end chase cards. To get rid of them in a bulk sale you're going to have to discount them pretty heavily. If you try to sell them as one lot, I can see you getting 5-10% on a good day, and possibly less, with common cards being thrown in for free.

I'm not insulting your collection, I'm trying to help. I just see you spending hours of time on cards that aren't worth the time.

I wish you luck, just don't spend all your time on this deal unless you're getting paid something.

  • Jim,

Thanks for being helpful as always.

I do understand what you are saying about the value and selling at a discount. If I sell it at 5 - 10% of face value I still have to get some idea of the face value. At this point, I am getting 5-10% of an unknow value. How does one quickly and easily evaluate 80,000 cards? This in itself is a rough guess. 70 to 90,000 is pretty accurate though.

When you want to sell something, people always want to know what it is you are selling.
Becketts database tells me what cards I have AND helps me track the cards. I just need to be able to let others see what I have.

Can you give me a quick run down on having cards graded? Procedure, price etc. I just saw a mint card valued @ .40 and the same card PSA 10 listed on ebay for $9.99.

I am working on a commission on this project. So far, all I've got in it is my time. It's something I can do in my spare time. I have been putting in alot of time because I'm having fun. I'm sure the fun will wear off though. A friend of mine passed away and his wife wants to move out of the house and into a no maintence housing complex and she can't take the cards with her. I am just doing what I can to help.
    Thanks for the info.
