Once again, it's time to play "A or B?"

Today's subject: a pair of 1881 farthings, with 3 berries (the common type).

Please explain your selection if you have time to do so. Thanks.

Here is "A":

Y'know, I just realized that these are two different Freeman varieties. Obverse 6 (top) and Obverse 7 (bottom). The reverses are the same. Notice the difference in the nose shapes.

I like "B" because of color.

neither coin is my cup of tea, but hey they're coins, what's not to like?

A isn't as badly tarnished as B. image

Besides, she has apparently had a nose job before A was engraved - great improvement.image

    A) Pros - Seems to be higher grade than A
    A) Cons - photo appears a little washed out and the color isn't as nice as B

    B) Pros - AWESOME Color
    B) Cons - Has some 'undesirable' toning on the reverse

If you're buying for eye appeal, take B and because it is AU-ish, I would take my finger and try to work some of the dark discoloration off to lighten the effect. The color is fantastic...

If you're buying to Slab, pick A since it appears higher grade and doesn't have as bad discolored toning and is relatively problem free.

A problem free UNC-ish or a killer eye appeal AU with a little discoloration.?...?

Depends on taste. I Like B

I like A better. B has a few rim hits and appears to have some hits on the cheek and field at 8 o'clock. What is the green spot at 5 o'clock under her shoulder. -Dan

A is better because there are some scratches on B that I don't like.

A - Much better strike on reverse, plus some of the better color on B is bordering on dark oxidation that may become worrisome. Clear choice to me.

    A...................
  • I prefer the color of B.

  • I chose A for a couple of reasons. First, the hit on the cheek on the obverse of B is very distracting and draws immediate attention. Second, coin A has a lot better detail than coin A with no significant hits on the coins devices on the either the obverse or reverse.

  • I went 'B'.

Why....because I like it more due to colour and 'A'l ooks like it has a 'dimple' in it ( on Victorias neck ).

"A" would be my choice, "B" has a better strike, but the black spot between the "I" and "C" makes it look like it was holed and repaired.

Pictures are a blessing and a curse. I can see what you mean. But, it is merely an artifact of the big carbon spot.
