New purchase from Crabtree Coins(shield nickel)

I was beginning to lose hope at the Baltimore show Friday when finally, in the last set of aisles in the back section(1800), I foulnd a table whose owner specializes in nickels. Some beautiful Lib nicks in 64 and 65 NGC/PCGS. I was looking for an upgrade/white not toned (but original) shield type. I got lucky 4 hours in!! Here, a PCGS MS64! It has a nice soft cartwheel and has a nice satiny look to it that matches beautifully with my 3CN and LHN! The stars and shield lines are quite crisp albeit the motto is very soft. It is untoned and unplayed with. Jon Rosenthal was with me and gave me an additional thumbs up! These are tough to image but I think I did well here. I experimented using a very old technique, keeping the cam close to the coin while sacking the benefits of a high lighting angle-this produces the most sharp details for my coolpix.

Very happy to have walked away from the show with one new piece, seems to be my magic number-the last four summer Baltimore shows-one coin per! Hope others had success. Comments always welcome!

That's a nice 1882 nickel. The shield and star radials are well struck. The coin has some nice die cracks, particularly on the obverse above the top leaf clusters, and going up through the "D" in the motto. Incidentally, this is precisely why the motto is somewhat softly struck; the obverse die was beginning to fail, and with the die cracks as seen, the striking pressure wasn't transmitted fully to the planchet in the area of the motto. That is quite characteristic of shield nickels. In my view, it is a point of interest and not a detraction. I hope this coin inspires you to learn more about this interesting series, which has always been one of my personal favorites.
