Middle Eastern copper/ nickel.

I've been paying a lot more attention to this stuff lately because of the tiny
amounts I've been able to accumulate in thirty years of very active searching.
It's can be found worn in poundage but uncirculated coins seem very few and
far between. Even those made in larger numbers like the Saudi Arabian and
Iranian coins are most elusive. There are a few that are available in hordes
but the bulk can't be found here. Partly this is probably because of the language
and alphabet differences. There is also relatively little tourist travel to most of
the countries in the region. Face values tend to be high which further stifles
wouldbe horders.

This is one of the few areas that I wasn't able to establish trading contacts in
the issuing countries. Apparently exceedingly few Arabs both collect coins and
read/ write English.

Is anyone aware of any accumulations or sources for these coins?

I once got a mini-hoard of FAO-issue SH-1353 (1974) Iranian 1-rial pieces (KM1183). Nice BU coins, for the most part, though one or two were spotty. I noticed the final digit (Arabic 3) in some of them was repunched or blundered somehow, giving it a forked appearance sort of like the letter F (unless I am an idiot and merely misinterpreting a different numeral as a 3, but I thought these were a one-year type?). About 30% of the pieces I had had this anomaly.

I have six of these left, one of which has the apparent repunched or blundered Arabic 3 in the date. I would call five of them MS63 and one MS64. One of the MS63 pieces is spotty, the rest are nice (including the apparent "forked 3" variety). These catalog five bucks each in BU. I think I had the spotty MS63 marked for a buck, the MS64 and the "forked-3" coin at $2.25, and the regular MS63 pieces at $1.75. Of course if you wanted to swap a single older coin for all six of these, I would be tickled, since I don't have as much of a market for 20th century material.

Edit: I am an idiot, at least when it comes to deciphering squiggles on Arabic/Middle Eastern coins. image

These aren't a one-year type. I think my "blundered 3" coin is actually a 4 (SH1354 / 1975 AD). But then you never know, when it comes to an idiot's interpretations. image

Thanks for the info. It is invaluable.

These catalog for $10 now, though it's one I suspect is high.

    PM sent.
