Question on German medals and classifications

Here is my educational question of the week......

I was combing through some old 18th century medals on coinarchive.com (a great site - Link-a-roo), and I had a few questions about the system used to classify medals. I see there are a few common references on most of the medals such as:
Heller 363
Slg. Erlanger 2415
Zepernick 65

Can anybody shed light on the different classification identifiers? What is the most prominent in the US and Europe? What are the best books on each classification system? I assume the different systems are comparable to Krause's KM number and the DAV (Davidson) numbers used to identify talers.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Here is one example of a medal I was browsing ---> Bamberg 1746 medal

British Historical Medals 1760-1960 by L. Brown 3 Vol set,
Coincraft Catague of The World's Show by L. Allen's
    British Coronation Medals,Wollaston .
Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britian and Ireland, British Museumimage

Here are some British ones , these are not price or grade oriented such as Krause.

I find that alot of German websites rarely list the Krause KM numbers, but instead use a more specialized reference. Instead they reference the smaller books such as Jaeger, Kennepohl and several others for the coins I am looking for.
Though these books are written in German, they focus only on one German State, thus my uncle or I have obtained several of those books for the state of Hannover. I can bring one with me next time if you want to see them.
