Finally found an 1807 Large Stars Variety...................PCGS??

My pictures...................the selles pics are a whole lot darker than the coin in hand. This VF20 is a nice example, and welcomed to the collection of 1807's I have accumulated thus far.

Any more out there??

I'll say PCGS VF-35, but it could be XF-40 because the strike on the hair curls is frequently mushy for the O-114. I do like the color and overall look of the coin.

Damn nice coin sir, damn nice. The eye appeal factor is off the charts with this coin. I'd grade the coin XF45 easily. What really stands out to me are the obverse stars and how well defined they are. Also, on the reverse the motto banner is very solid and the shield is scrumptious.

One can look for quite a long time before finding such a nice example as this. Congrats.

Edited to change my grade from XF40 to XF45 after taking some more time to look at the coin.

Outstanding! I love too the way the 50 is so far apart from C on the reverse.
Is that a variety for this year or were they all like that in 1807?

On my monitor, it looks slightly granular, with old gray surfaces, nice reverse strike, obverse seems a bit soft, I'm going to guess 35. The stars always show good definition, and this is no exception. I like it.

The 1807 Turban O-114 in my experience on the examples I own, and have seen..... seem to usually come with the stars struck up very nice as well as the left wing facing on the reverse. This coin posted seems to go along with my thoughts. Easily attributed with the lump under the seven in date, as well as lump at star 11 near the rim.

I've seen both services over-grade these as well as under-grade them. Sometimes they seem to try and compensate thinking they all come with weak strikes, sometimes not. Wear on wings seems fairly even.

Absolutely gorgeous original bustie. Very nice addition to you collection. I would say she is a VF-35 but with a coin like this the grade doesn't matter.image

Nice coin. I see a solid 35 and 40 on a decent day 3 times out of ten. But that being said- PCGS as well as the other plastic companies do not grade bust halves with any semblance of consistency- so who knows what PCGS calls it this time. Next time they grade her-????

My guess is PCGS gave it VF25. I also note the granular look. Darn hard marriage to find, especially in PCGS holder.image

I like the look of that O-114, nice even wear. Nicely struck for an 1807, the LIBERTY, dentils, and stars are very sharp.

    stman,
    Thanks for the educational comment.
I wonder what had happened at the mint to make the last variety (O-114) a better strike than the previous varieties.
Was it better annealing process of the planchets? Or could it be that there a so few of these O-114, that the dies were relatively fresh at the time of minting them toward the end of the year, hence the better than average strikes for this particular variety? If they could only talk.

    slumlord98,
any facts as to why this is so on the O-114?

I will post other pics and grade when coin is in hand

Actually the emission sequence for the 1807 CBHs was O-113 small stars, O-114 large stars, O-111 bearded, and lastly O-112 50/inverted 5.
