When does NGC give out a "PL"?

What does it take for NGC to give out the prooflike designation?

When I had called them about 2 months ago about my 1811 Bank Token 18 pence and why it didn't get a PL designation (I had thought it was an actual proof), I was told that they didn't give out a PL for that series.

Then there's this piece that didn't get a PL either:

If whether or not a PL is series-specific, how do you know whether or not PL is a possibility, or whether you should submit to a different service?

I haven't seen any list anywhere showing which coins they potentially award PLs to...

Excellent question... I had a 1947 Canadian Quarter that I thought would PL and it did not. This whole PL thing is tough in connection with several series especially 8 Reales... I like the nf 5c

The way it was explained to me is that if a grade is PL66, the PL is the minting process, if the grade is MS66PL the PL is prooflike appearance.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Right, I'm referring to the latter. NGC seems incredibly stingy on PLs, either that or they simply do not give them out on certain series, regardless of what the coin looks like...

For Canada, PL is a minting process. I've never seen an NGC Canadian coin (or Newfy) that's MSxx PL. Same with PCGS.

ANACS, on the other hand, uses MSxx PL to note those made with the PL minting process.
  • PBRat is right on! TPGs IMO do not have the true visual grading experience to discern a MS-PL or MS-DMPL when it comes to most world coins, with a percevied prejudice to coins from certain countries in particular. The NF 5 cent, based on the pic., which is totally speculative, would be a great example of a coin that could warrant a MS-PL grade if the coin in hand displays the mirrors that the coin posted above does. It's just really sad IMO that US coins in certain series are eligible for the MS-PL designation despite a die history for that series which reflects that no die or marriage of dies were capable of producing such an appearance. Well they don't call this the "Dark Side" for no reason?!?!?!?!?

Yup. That's my biggest issue. Coins that, if they were Morgan dollars instead, would have PL or DMPL slapped on them in a heartbeat, for some inexplicable reason are "ineligible" for the designation. It's completely and utterly dain bramaged on the part of NGC.

It's [CENSORED] annoying, if you ask me...

It's like on Canada PL coins, PCGS doesn't issue CAMs or DCAMs.
