Kearns, Lopez to Nationals - What are the Reds thinking?

I can't figure this trade out. I thought the Reds were trying to win this season. Check it out:

Reds Nationals Trade

  • I'm thinking Soriano might be moving soon by the acquisition of Kearns.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

The Reds got two fairy live arms in the deal, and the fact is that if they didn't do something about that bullpen they definitely weren't going anywhere this season. They paid a pretty steep price, but in order to get something you have to give something up.

I'm not sure what the Reds were thinking. Here's hoping the 23 year old lefty is truly a stud prospect.

Giving up two 26 year olds in Lopez (a former all star) and Kearns (a fan favorite and power hitter) is a lot for guys I've never heard of. And I consider myself more than just a casual sports fan.

  • I think I'm going to have to go see the Nats a few times this season. I'm hoping they don't trade Soraino, but if they do I hope they get ALOT for him.

  • I know that the Reds need pitching help, but are all the races so tight that nobody was willing to give the Reds more for Lopez and Kearns?? Hard to believe!
There are two types of people in this world; those who like Neil Diamond, and those who don't. My ex-wife loves him!!

Bad trade for Reds fans, if the Nat's keep Soriano they could be looking good.

The real gem in this deal isn't even Kearns - it's Lopez. He's an excellent IF with speed and mid-level power... it's a shame he now has to hit regularly in RFK because that may hurt his power numbers a bit compared to hitting in Great American... but he's still an excellent player.

You look at the Reds revamped bullpen - it still sucks and is certainly not competitive enough even if they managed to get into the playoffs. Guardado is not even a shadow of his former self when he actually could pitch well, Coffey is the best guy there but the set-up man isn't going to win enough games for you... everyone else is highly suspect - Weathers, Mercker, Hammond - all capable of destroying a game in just a few batters.

Soriano will be traded for certain - it's not a matter of if, it's just a question of when. He's not necessary this season, he's too valuable to not trade, and since they are out of the race there's no chance they'll keep him. If they want him back that badly, they can make a bid for him in free agency, but they know he's not coming back.
