Does anyone collect moderns by type?

cladkingcladking Posts: 28,701 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm referring primarily to actual circulating coins made since 1950. Are people actually
collecting these or is it a case of very little demand up against an even smaller supply.

I collect silver by type and moderns by type. I also collect many series by date and most
of these are modern cu/ ni but also include some older bronze like English pennies.

  • My Rijksdaalder set runs right up to 2001 from 1898 so all the moderns are included.

Some of my high grade Irish coins are also post 1950. I initially bought these to sell on but they are mainly UNC/BU so I held on to them with the idea of maybe slabbing them. The most modern is a 1966 specimen.

I also have about a pound of post 1950 World Coins but for resale, I'm not collecting them.

Oh my favourite post 1950 item is my 1980 Proof Sovereign Set ( 1/2 Sov - 5 Pounds ). image

kinda......I have a dozen or so of the beautiful proof world gold coins produced for small countries during the 70s. Most were made by the Franklin Mint, and the Royal Mint. These were legal tender in those places, but I doubt they every actually circulated (in fact, what gold coins do still truly circulate?)

here is an example (not the best picture however, but truly a beautiful proof coin in person)

I'm glad you say this, since I just got one myself, but haven't seen it in hand yet. Can't wait!

  • I collect British 1900 to 1967 + 1970 by type 1/4d to crown, just 96 to go for the full set. Sounds alot but that is out of about 850. My most complete run is the 1/4d which I only need the 1953 2+A circulation issue.

Anyone out there with a spareimageimageimage

very nice! I love the Balboa series. that one looks twice as large as mine, but it has half the fineness (.500 gold versus .900). congrats!

  • I did the British 20th century silver by type, a very satisfying endeavour

Note to self: take photos of this set!

I guess the closest I came to collecting modern stuff by type was when I was doing the Dansco Irish collections. Actually, those were everything- both a type AND a date set.

I do the entire world by type from 1860 - Date (No gold or NCLT) so yes I do collect the moderns by type. In fact they are some of the toughest challenge because they are so cheap that few dealers will carry them, list them or bring them to shows. There are alot of low price coins from the 1970's 80's and 90's thay I just haven't been able to locate.

I agree with most of what condor101 says. Dealer just don't bother to carry recent stuff. I only collect pre-decimal but you don't see a lot of George V and even less Elizebeth II. Believe it or not there are two types of the churchhill crown. Most dealer will have a few thrown into a box getting all knocked about and apart from the embassessment of standing there looking through them, to ask about them or even to buy one image
