HALFWAY HOME!!! 50 Down--1967 Topps Football Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Halfway Home! Well I hit my goal of 50 completed sets by year-end 2006 a bit early but more importantly am halfway home to my longstanding goal of 100 sets complete with every card PSA 8 or better.

Sometimes you are smart and sometimes you are lucky. Fearful I would not see another Speedy Duncan card for a long long time I made a dumb top bid on Ebay of over $1,600. Fortunately someone else was even dumber--the super aggressive Shopping Lucy who won the pop 7 Speedy Duncan card at about $1,650. Following this I received two offers to buy the Duncan but both were close to the Shopping Lucy Price.

Enter my friend Mr. Teemu(Tom Malito) who helped me finish my 62 Parkhurst set who scouted down a Speedy Duncan PSA 8 card for me and included it in a trade for a couple of hockey cards I had. In the trade we valued Speedy Duncan at $700.

Thanks Tom--most of my sets are finished by fellow collectors who help me scout down the last few cards. I appreciate it!

Like almost every set I collect I had most of the set raw and submitted virtually every card to PSA. The one card that proved difficult was the Speedy Duncan which is usually found off-center.

I will let this set rest at 8.18--currently 4th on the PSA Set Registry behind some pretty famous football set collectors including the Evil Empire and Fuzzdude.

This represents the 17th set I have completed in PSA 8 or better since year-end 2005. The 51st will be announced shortly.

My goal continues to be over 100 vintage sets each card PSA 8 or better.

Clearly this is not correct. The Empire is a HOF'er and deservedly so. You are a HOF'er and deservedly so. Why I am mentioned in this group? I'm not even down to one card on that set nd set it aside for some time now. I'm just the guy holding down third until some real collector want it.
Congratulations on your yearly goal achievement. Guess we have to have a mid-year revision. Not bad for July. Shall I suggest 60?
Also have updated the Olympics for the 50's and 60's and have sent them to Nearmint. Fair warning: You will not be happy, you have lost ground to the competition in both groups (actually gained in the 50's but the Empire gained more). Now you have the eyarly goal done, back to the olympics where it really counts.
    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

    Thanks for the congrats.

    To respond to specific comments:

    XBaggyPants,

No extras--sorry--good luck on the set and esp. on the Duncan card.

    Ironranger,

Thanks--have not received the 55B Landry yet.

    AlohaET,

Thank you--I will try to report on each as soon as it is completed.

    ToppsCollector,

Thanks--sorry--I have been done with 59 Topps FB for some times anjd have no extras hanging around.

    Fuzz,

Not true--The Evil Empire is not in The Hall--just Merkle, Fogel, Louchios and myself. He is certainly a candidate in the future although he would not be my first choice. On the Olympics--here I make progress and pick up a couple of points and the Evil Empire gains more....aaaaaaagh! Guys--stop selling your sets to the Evil Empire! I'll perservere here....and I will follow closely the advice of others to "Fear the Fuzz".

I also wanted to point out that Jim can be very helpfull to us fellow collectors looking for cards ourself. He has helped me on a couple recent deals we made . For example as Jim upgraded his hof 52 bowman small set he was right there willing to help me with the 7 he just upgraded at a more then fair price and as for buying cards he needs i know he will be my first choice from now on.
Every deal i have done with Dav HAS BEEN AS SMOOTH AS SILK.
He will always offer a more then fair price with no attemps at low balling you , or headaches with getting paid the mans word is gold.
I say this because i truely believe in the long run Jim is a better person to sell to then dare i say the mighy mosh. Jim may not pay stupid $ but you will not get short changed and the fact that he is willing to help those that help him in return is worth more then a couple dollars.

    Congrats again buddy
OH and by the way WE ALL FEAR THE FUZZ I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant

    Tom,

Thanks--it was nice to have you over and see the collection. Lets do it again when you have some additional time.

    Softparade,

101 naturally. When you love the hobby like I do there is never an end. I am more inclined to collect new sets rather than upgrade to psa 9 from psa 8 although I may do some of that as well.

The next 50 are goinng to be tough and will require me to finish some difficult pre-war sets and tough expensive sets from the 50s. They are so expensive that for certain ones(52 Topps, 53 Topps,34 Goudey for example) I am attempting to complete them with some psa 7 cards(yikes). Ultimately I hope to do them in 8 but with the Mantle, Pafko and Mathews likely to run close to $200K for the three in psa 8 that may be tough.
