I fell in love with this dark copper from Aspen Park (plus another from NEN)

Since I made a decision to not bid on that 1804 Bank of England proof, I decided to hunt around for some more dark copper.

While browsing Aspen's inventory I fell in love with this halfpenny.

NGC MS66BN. Looks to be quite lustrous. Evan says that the overall color is closer to the pictured reverse than obverse (which I suspected by the white balance).

On a whim I asked if he could do better than the listed price. He did. So I did. image

And one to go with the above piece, a penny in 64BN.

I'd been watching this one for a while, it bothered me, and I finally said "[CENSORED] IT!" and negotiated for it.

I am REALLY curious to see how this one looks in hand.

    NEN's description:

This piece is actually a mint state example with fully prooflike fields (certified erroneously as a proof). Hints of red in the lettering.

According to Chris at NEN, this one is misattributed on the holder as PF64 BN when in fact it's a mint state piece. He said that it definitely has mirror fields and if resubmitted, he would expect it to get a PL designation. That piqued my curiosity, since you don't see too many early British coppers that are PL, and the pictures don't really imply that...

Wouldn't an MS piece designated PL actually be more scarce than a proof?

It should. High end business strikes have always had my full respect, proofs are nice but they were made for collectors only, same with the specimens.

If you like George III stuff, you should perhaps PM yeti-cosmic, I think he still has one Boulton piece for sale in its original capsule. I could be wrong perhaps and even if not, he will probably ask you ten times its weight in gold, plus a guitar. image

100% agree with Syracusan - I will take a high end business strike over a proof any day.

    Beautiful coins, Coinpictures!

Yours is much better than mine, but this was all I could find in my price range (and paid too much)

But, it is much nicer than the TT pictures

The '6' in the date looks repunched - is yours?

If you're looking to upgrade, there's a 63BN being auctioned on the 17th. image

Don't fret about the cost. We all overpay for coins here and there, and all that matters is if you like it. image I have quite a few coins that I'll never get out from under (unless there's a HUGE market shift), but for the most part they're coins I wouldn't want to sell anyway. I'm a bit more aggressive when it comes to coins that I know I'm going to keep, as opposed to coins intended for resale.

As far as the overdate, I'll let you know when the coin arrives...
  • Well, This one is kinda fugly, But what can you expect for a $ 1.50........image
