Ok, who created the Kent Hrbek Basic Set

Its not even close to being a basic set. 7-11 coins? Potato chip discs? Kraft hand cut? Denny's holograms?

If the Mattingly basic set was created using this logic, it would have at least triple the amount of cards in it.

Honestly - are you anticipating a throng of Kent Hrbek fans to come online and start creating PSA War III over this heresy?

Sure - this should be the Master Set, not the Basic - but, frankly, I'm sure PSA will be happy if anyone start putting together any form of a Hrbek player set.

It really shouldn't matter who the player is, it should be accurate.

You can have the cards removed by requesting it. There was a Senators Team card in the Killebrew Master set that listed all of the pictured players, Killebrew was not listed. I requested that it should be removed for that reason and they did it.

I don't ever plan on collecting the set I just pointed out the Hrbek set because it was just added. Looking at most of the recently added basic sets, most have a lot of oddball cards in them. I'm not sure if I want these types of cards added to the Mattingly basic set.

    Compare these sets:
    Jeff Bagwell Basic Set
    Craig Biggio Basic Set
    Ken Griffey Jr. Basic Set

    to these sets:
    Wade Boggs Basic Set
    Don Mattingly Basic Set
    Mike Schmidt Basic Set

The first three sets are more recently added. The next three are three of the first basic sets on the registry.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - I remember when that set was first put together [with my help] over five years ago, and I remember thinking to myself "Geez - I have ninety-four different Mike Schmidt PSA-graded cards? I must be crazy!"

I actually just met the guy that started that set this past weekend at the local show. He's the top dog on a couple other baseball player sets as well.

If you aren't comfortable with the card selections, send PSA a note and they'll probably get removed or at least moved to a master set.
  • Like many of you, I was surprised (and, frankly, almost outraged) when the Basic sets that I was collecting were suddenly expanded by the addition of some of the cards that all of you have mentioned. I talked to BJ and Gayle, and others, at PSA about this. They feel, strongly, that all modern cards are "Basic", except:
    Parallel cards
    Insert cards
    "Special" cards
    League Leader cards
    Promos
    Prototypes
    and Test set cards
That's, essentially, it. Everything else can be included in the modern "Basic" sets. For a while I fumed, and argued. Now, I simply "work within the system"...I list my "Kraft Hand-Cuts", 7-11 coins, etc., etc., etc. I really can't see any other option. It is just WAY too difficult for PSA to try to list all of the cards that CAN be considered "Basic" (instead of the ones that can't)...there are just way too many "difficult calls".
    Always interested in:
    1949 Eureka, 1921 Exhibit, 1948 Exhibit, 1950 R423, 1997 Donruss VXP, 1992 Topps Kids
Gretzky, Arod, Clemens, Bonds, Maddux, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice and more!
  • Well, PSA has certainly come full circle on this issue. I can remember a couple years ago when they would not let me add a 1991 Bowman or a 1991 Fleer to the George Brett Basic Set. I was told the "Basic Set" was complete and would not added to. I immediately turned my attention to the George Brett Master Set and haven't looked back. The 1991 Bowman and 1991 Fleer cards are still not a part of the Brett Basic Set.

    Thanks

That's bizarre, as it is completely opposite of documented conversations I've had with them on the Mike Schmidt Registry. Heck - we went back and forth a lot a year or two ago about adding Sportflics to the Basic Player set - as they were available everywhere in packs when I grew up. But the decision was no - so all of those are on the Master Set.

I frankly do not care, as I collect the Master Set primarily. But it seems like different standards are being applied to different players - potentially depending on when they played...?

  • I just recently had the George Foster and Ken Griffey Sr. sets added and I had the same issues with cards that used to not be in the basic set that are now. It was a futile conversation.

That's strange about 91 Bowman and Fleer.

On a side note, I'd love to see a pic of your 79 Topps Brett. image

Do you mean my 1978 Brett? image My scanner went out, but I have now replaced it. Once my boys' baseball season comes to an end (this week-end) I will try to get a scan of it up.

    Thanks
