BVG vs PSA

How do the BVG graded cards compare with the PSA grades? I haven't sent any cards to PSA yet but about 3 years ago I did get several cards graded by BVG. These were all 50s and 60s star cards including several Mantles. The first batch was 11 cards that I thought would grade 7 or higher. I have since sold the cards but if I remember correctly, I got one 8.5, seven 8s and three 7.5s. I send in a second batch but don't remember how many cards there were. I still have some of these cards because I want to submit them to PSA. The thing that I don't like about the BVG grading is your final grade can only be 1/2 point about the lowest subgrade. I have a '53 Bowman PeeWee Reese with three 8s and a 5 so the final grade is a 5.5. My 54 Bowman Mantle would have been a 7 if it weren't for the 4 I got on centering. BVG really kills you on centering. How would these cards do if submitted to PSA? I have busted 2 of the lesser expensive cards out of the holders but haven't gotten the nerve to bust the expensive cards yet. I had one card come back as evidence of recoloring and one come back as being trimmed. I swear I can't find anything wrong with either card. If I get them busted out, I will scan the cards and post pictures here. My scanner doesn't scan slabbed cards very good.

The subgrade thing still is going to hold true in a PSA holder, the only difference is you'll get a qualifier instead.

ie. On your Mantle you'll probably get a 7(OC), the Reese could be a (PD), (MC) or (ST) depending on the area of the 5 sub-grade.

Even though PSA doesn't use subgrades, the same standards still apply. A card isn't going to be a higher grade without the merits being higher. Heck, my PSA 4 Namath rc would have been a 7 if not for the small stain on the front. image But it doesn't matter who I send it to, the grade isn't going to change to anything near a 7. A card either is a 7 or it's not. I do believe SGC is a bit more lenient on their centering standards, and to be honest, I think beckett is more lenient than PSA for the same grade as well. Double check both companies centering standards, you may be better off in that BVG holder.

Thanks for the reply. How do the 2 companies compare when it comes to grading? Typically, would a BVG 8 cross to a PSA 8?

The L/R would fall into a straight 7, but the T/B would be 5. I would hope the corners hold up for a PSA 7o/c (or 8)because the centering would not allow anything better than a 5. IMHO

A 7 or 8 oc would be better than the 4.5 that BVG has it at. Here is the '53 Reese.
