I need some trade advice...................

I have a chance to pick up a 1957 PSA 9 Ernie Banks. I don't need it for my set, but I love that card of Ernie and this card is absolutely awesome.

In order to get it, I would need to do one of the following:

1) Sell my 1958 PSA 8 Hank Aaron and my 1956 Topps complete set in VG-EX.

2) Sell the Aaron, a GAI 5 1952 Andy Pafko black back, and my T-206 GAI 3 Walter Johnson portrait.

Either of those would yield the cash to get the Banks.

I'm undecided whether to do this.......generally, I almost always sell or trade lower condition for higher condition because it's a better investment and it thins out my collection so I don't have so many cards.

What would y'all do? Would you even make the trade at all? Thanks in advance.

  • I wouldn't do it, as the Aaron, 56 set, and Johnson are all better "investments" imo.

  • Not sure who those others are that you mention... I would never ever give up a VG Big Train unless it was for a Joe Jax, Cobb, Ruth, or Matty.
  • That Ernie card is my favorite of him. I would not do that trade though. Sounds like you're giving up too much. Btw, there's also another 9 listed now on ebay, albeit with a slight tilt..

  • The first scenario all depends on how much you like ungraded sets. seems like you are giving up an awful lot for that Banks however.

The second scenario I wouldn't even consider. Giving up way too much there.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I agree with this 100 percent, but it does appear that you are giving up way to much

Thanks for the feedback guys and more feedback is encouraged. If I could get away with just selling the '56 set to get the Banks, I'd probably do that. The set is a solid VG-EX, but I don't generally collect that low of a condition. I don't want to part with the Aaron or the other cards necessarily............I paid $100 for the Johnson before it was graded and a ridiculously low $25 for the Pakfo. Actually I should probably crack them out and have PSA grade them.

Even the 56 Topps Set even up would be too much in my opinion.56 Topps is a classic set no matter what condition and represented some of the greatest players that ever played. There will always be buyers for that set in VG/EX at a price equal or more than the price of the Banks.

I would not trade for either of your two suggested trades. just the 56' set - what would that go for $2,000-$2,500? the SMR on a psa 9 Banks is $1,750.

I agree. While the 57 Banks is a great card, especially in that condition I don't think I'd give up that much to get it.

Seems to be the consensus here.

Personally, I would find a gorgeous, high end PSA 8 Banks...some are better than the 9's out there...and keep the rest of my cards, expecially the Walter Johnson.

I agree with five on this. I wouldnt trade even just the set for the banks, never mind the other two options.

    Hi Ron

I kind of agree with not doing the deal.

I'm sitting in my room which I have started to display all the items I've picked up - many of the items are valued less than the superb framing...

    My point...

If someone said: "you've collected some great stuff - I'll trade you my 'one' 52T Mantle PSA 6 for ALL of it?"

My answer? Even if the trade were equitable - the one card would not fill the void in my collecting heart - if you know what I mean.

If you collected that set - card by card e.g. - "one" card might feel a bit small once in your hand.

If this makes no sense? I don't think I even understand what I said - but I "feel" it.

Mike - great thoughts and very well put.

Thanks to all for the input and keep it coming. I think what I may do is sell the '56 set anyway, pick up a nice PSA 8 Banks, and pocket the rest to spend at the National. Anyone with me on that? image

I love the 56 set, so I would keep it. image

...money for the nationals wouldn't be too bad either I suppose.

I would definately stand pat with my 58T Aaron, the 56 set, the 52 Pafko and The T206 Johnson. I personally feel that the prices for 9's are ridiculous (many times) when you can have such a nice accumulation of great material for the same price. This is a perfect example.
