The September Heritage Auction looks like they are teeing up some nice nickels.

Five cents is too expensive for me, I can only afford one. image

  • Looks like a good auction, with several possible upgrades for my set. On the other hand, I see that they have several in ICCS - and my experience with Heritage is that if they have a coin that remains in an ICCS holder, it is because it will not cross to PCGS. So, some of the lofty grades will likely drop by a point or two. For example, the 1902 5¢ in ICCS MS 67 is likely a beautiful, even slate color - but PCGS will downgrade it for being too dark (IMO).

Impossible to tell from the scan.

I'm not sure if this collection was a "cross everything to PCGS" like the Belzberg collection was. I'd say no, looking at some of the other coins in ICCS holders.

Why does Heritage have so many of the coins listed as Proof when they are only MS?

They often make a few mistakes when first entering the lots. I'm sure they'll be corrected.

I saw that too. Lots of PR45s.

This auction is shaping up to be a wowzer.

Now, please, please, please, no one bid the 1859 Brassie, please. image

I have an 1899 ICCS MS 67 with exactly the same look as what they are showing (assuming that the picture is true to color). The strike is great, the fields are flawless, and PCGS will not go higher than MS 66 because of the dark toning. I considered (for about a second) getting it dipped, but I hate that. My guess is that it would upgrade substantially if it was blast white. It reminds me a bit of the discussion regarding Sandy Campbell's submission of the 1929 sp 10¢, which was discussed at length at the CCRS....

Sure, because dark toning typically doesn't equal great eye appeal. For a coin to get a 67 at PCGS, the eye appeal has to be there. For ICCS, eye appeal doesn't affect the grade (I know you already know this - this info is for the general audience)
