Trot Nixon goes 0-9 today--is that a record?

I've never heard of a player going 0 for 9 in a game (not to mention Jason Varitek went 0 for 8). Is Nixon's accomplishment a record? Anyone know?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

It could possibly be, however if it was, wouldn't the announcers have mentioned it?

I bet a Met holds the record ............image

Varitek went 0-8 with three whiffs (Trot had 4). That's a long day for a catcher.

I don't know about the announcers mentioning anything...those clowns that do the White Sox television games on Comcast make the Yankee announcers look impartial. I can understand being "homers" to an extent, but every call was "we" did this, and "they" did that. Every fly ball hit by the White Sox was accompanied by the announcers rooting for it to drop in, or go over the fence, and every ball hit by the Red Sox was met with yawns from the comical duo (I think it's Harrelson and some other guy). They whined about "two different strike zones" "one for us, and another for them" and when Papelbon came out for the 9th inning, they mentioned how the Red Sox "learned from watching the White Sox" how to make Papelbon a closer (what?). When Dye hit the game tying HR in the 9th, I thought both of their heads were going to explode from all the excitement. The next time I have to sit through a YES network love-fest, at least I'll be happy that even they aren't as over the top as the act these guys in the White Sox booth put on.

So, I don't know if it was a record or not (0-9) but I'm sure it's a day he'd like to forget.

The radio announcers for the White Sox are worse than the TV guys!
  • Did Papelbon blow a save?
  • his obp is 0.415 so there is a 58.5% chance he won't reach base in an at-bat. the probability of not reaching base 9 straight times is estimated (1-.415)^9 = 0.0080242194 or about 1/125 (not taking into account "streakiness"). however, the odds of getting 9 at-bats in one game are much more slim.

Papelbon and Timlin each blew a save.

Watched highlights of the game, saw AJ break up a double play that certainly should have been called for interference.

Last player to go 0-9 was Raffy in 1991.

  • As soon as Rudy Seanez came into pitch for the Red Sox, I had this feeling the Bosox would lose. He is terrible. I've heard the Red Sox are shopping him around.

And not one Red Sox coach noticed this? Francona should have been out of the dugout right after that!!

Also, Dye missed tagging third on the way to returning to second after a line drive was caught. If the ump sees that, are they supposed to call Dye out, or do the Red Sox HAVE to challenge it (which they did not -- because, again, the coaches missed it).

You must make a challenge to the ump for a ruling. If you don't and a pitch is thrown, it's too late for an appeal and the play stands.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

    Extra inning games are ridiculous.

Making them play 19 innings is a good solution? And people want to criticize soccer for penalty kicks?

  • The equal in baseball to a penalty kick in soccer is home run derby you twit.

Have you been listening to Ozzie Guillen again?

I am simply saying making these guys go out there and play 19 innings (the day before the all star break no less) is ridiculous.

  • So they should get a pass because they are coming up ON TIME OFF?!?!?! That's absurd, you twit.

No, simply saying 19 inning games are ridiculous.

I am not proposing a solution, I don't have one, but playing 19 innings is ridiculous.

I agree and that's why every player hates AJ. What an a-hole.

I like the idea of extra innings (as opposed to the cop-out solution in soccer like penalty kicks). Let the outcome of the game depend on the game itself and not some made-up sport-related coin toss of an event. If these were amateurs, I can see reason for limiting their playing time...but these fifty players are making something like $4.4 million a year (average) to play a game in front of paying customers (in the stands and on television) until a win is achieved.
