Question about modern...suggestions wanted

A coworker asked me today about what he thought would be some good packs of cards to open with his son. His son is 9 and they love baseball, and he knows I am into cards.

My initial suggestion was 06 topps heritage because it combines new players with the old look, and the chance and autographed cards and the like are there. I am thinking the $20 blaster boxers are his best bet, but are they being offered this year?

If not Heritage, are there any other sets he should look into? He's not wanting to break the bank on cards, just something fuin to share with his son.

    Ax,

I've bought some of the '06 Heritage blaster boxes at Target and a local store called Bi-Mart. After reading about some fun ripping '06 Topps Series I and II, I also found a blaster box of the Series I for $20 also. Nice looking cards with the current players a young one would enjoy and could relate to.

Let us know what they decide on!

I picked up a blaster box of 06 Bowman last week and was impressed.

Each pack had 2 chrome cards plus two other RCs on average. Also one auto in the box.

For youngsters just getting into the hobby I might also recommend Topps. The boxes are cheap and you get more packs per box.

I don't think one would find any blaster of Heritage at this point in time.

But, since this is for sharing with a 9 yr. old - if one wants to factor in affordability - the Topps series I and II would give the best bang for buck - more cards per pack than any of the more premium brands.

Plus, this year the brand is flooded with Mantle cards.

I haven't even picked up a pack this year but it's still my top recommendation due to affordability. My next choice would be Topps Opening Day and Total for affordability.

    Stone,

I was going to edit my original reply to say that the '06Topps series have the Mantle and Bonds(?) inserts, which may also make it more fun for a younger collector.

I was also going to add that my wife bought me a leftover '05Bowman Heritage blaster box (thinking it was '06Topps Heritage...) for Father's Day. I was really disappointed with the selection in those packs.

    Ax,

I'd be happy to check at our Bi-Mart for you if you can't find any blaster boxes of any type in your area. I live in the Pacific Northwest.

    LMK!

    Thanks for the replies.

I think the topps series i and ii would be a better value for them, just getting started and all. Then graduate to heritage.

  • Ax,
As you know from my name I collect Topps base series more than any other. Maybe it's the history that's built in to the cards? I don't know, but that's how my collecting started out. Luckily it was after the 87 Woodgrain incident lol. I would also recommend Bowman base. Again, nice designs that really draw in newcomers. I personally haven't even opened anything from 2--6 yet, I'm waiting on Bowman Chrome NFL. I also agree the Heritage look is great! Can't knock on Mantle either.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.
