How much friggin' longer will eBay auction numbers get?

If you have to write them down, those new 12 digit numbers are really cumbersome.

Maybe some math whiz here can crunch the numbers,
but it seems like if they'd throw in 4 or 5 letters along with numbers, we could get back to like 8 digits or so.
