Anyone know of this early 1970s football stamp set?

Would anyone have a clue by whom or how these football stamps were issued? Doing lookups on some of the players, I've narrowed the year of issue to probably 1971 or 1972 and they measure 1 5/8" x 2 1/4". They have perforated edges, although some of the examples I have were cut -- quite badly in some cases. The backs are blank so I think it's safe to assume they were designed to be stuck in an album. I must have the whole set, but no album. I have no idea when or how I got it.

Here's a sample of the Namath stamp:

Thanks for any help!

I remember collecting them when I was 11 years old. I had a Sunoco station near my house and my friends and I would go there and ask the attendants for some stamps. Sometimes they would give us some booklets and sometimes they would tell us to get lost.

I graduated from high school in '72 in southern Minnesota. I don't remember any Sunoco stations, so that's why I wasn't aware of this set.

    Thanks for the history lesson!

    Great set! Very affordable too.
Better player selection than topps cards from that era.

Also, cool action shots with no air-brushing out of team logos.

    Wolf,

You're right. Looking closer at the stamps, there seem to be mostly game-action shots of the players. I pulled out the big-name players and put them in sleeves -- Starr, Tarkenton, Staubach, Unitas, Bradshaw and Namath (and a Fair Hooker for another thread!).

There weren't many RBs that stood out, mainly OJ. Maybe I don't have a complete set...

Franco Harris, Calvin Hill and Lawrence McCutcheon would have been nice,

but these guys were pretty good too :

The complete set is 624 stamps, not counting the 82 update stamps issued only on the complete team sheets. If you have the whole set, congratulations image
