Card shops are dropping like flies in the Bay Area. At least three have closed in the last 6 months. What do you collect? Modern, vintage or both, where are you staying and how far are you willing to travel?

Maybe I can point you to a few.
  • Moosedog...I deal ainly with vintage....but look for modern New England players and inserts for my retail store.

We are staying at the Marriot at Fisherman's warf....will be there for 5 days....then driving up to Sonoma Valley for 2 days....then over to Lake Tahoe for another 2.....

    Anything along the way??

It may be a bit out of your way but I would try Stevens Creeks Sportscards in San Jose. They have a good selection of vintage, both graded and non-graded. I think they have two other locations which are closer to the city but they mainly deal in the modern stuff. Here's their ebay link. Have fun at the game!

Congratulations! San Francisco is a great place for a honeymoon. Don't forget to try an Irish coffee at that place down at the bottom of Lombard (?) where the trolley turns around. Street name may not be Lombard, but it's down at the bottom of the streetcar run where it turns around and heads back up. Best Irish coffee every and it's a real trip going in there and watching them pour.

There's also a great old memorabilia shop down by the wharf that specializes in things like Fillmore posters, handbills, etc. They may not have much in cards, but the paper collectibles they do have are worth a look.

Have fun....if you ever get out of the hotel room.

    Congratulations Bruce!

I would guess when you get to the hotel, you can check out the directory for some collectibles stores.

I really like SF - I think it was Frost who said the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in SF.

One year I went there in May and it was hotter'n hell!

Besides the whole SF scene - I recommend a day in the Napa valley - hit the winery scene.

Right across the GG Bridge - Sausalito - there a good breakfast place called Phil's (wonder if it's still there?) that we ate and then hit the wineries - my favorites were Christian Brothers and Englenooks.

Between Fisherman's warf, the baths, Yosemite, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, Alcatraz - and BTW, there's another "little Chinatown" near Golden Gate Park, the famous Haight - Ashbury St area - well, I guess you're gonna be busy!

Good luck and have a great time!

  • Mark...thanks for the well wishes...

Yes..Irish coffee is at the forefront of the list!! When I worked coast to coast, I would stay in San Fran twice a year. We always did medical shows at the Moscone Trade center...in downtown San Fran. We usually worked 16-18 hours a day while there....but the times we did get out...Irish coffees and watching the turnaround was at the top of the list.

Lombard Street is the world known twisty turny street with all the house on each side of it...
I almost got picked up for taking a skateboard down it...hey...it was a dare...there was much alcohol involved...blah blah blah.....something about disturbing the peace...
Cummon..500 cars a day go down that street...what's ONE skateboard?? lol

It will be fun....thanks for the tip on the store...you never know what you'll find...

    I thought the same thing!

It would take balls - it's really steep!

Have you ever been to the Presidio? I always thought it would be great to be stationed there and live right on the base. Great view of the GG Bridge and stuff.

I went to a Giants game last time I visited - was a nite game and it was cold.

I wouldn't mind if you posted some pics when you come back

I went to a popular bar that is famous for irish coffee - the guy lines up like a zillion cups at a time?

    Is it the Bueno Vista?

  • Presidio was great....one of the Union dock workers at the hall had a houseboat over there. We got to be friendly..and actually took a couple of Harelys across the GG down to Presidio. We visited his boat and had some people over.

    It was awesome...

Anything near the water works for me. A close friend here in MA has a 40+ ft boat in Greenwich, RI.....we go out all the time..head over to Block Island..Newport, RI...Martha's Vineyard....nothing like it.

Lombard..steep...oh yah!! I had to stop a couple of times to catch my wits...lol

Anything for a thrill though....I mean..you're talking to a guy that wiped out on his daughters Pocket Rocket (mini motorcycle...she's 13..easy guys...no rude stuff here..) the other day. I'm 40 going on 14 as the future Mrs. 5 Stat would say...

Photos are a must...I'll post some when we get back!!

I think that's the name, and, yup, he lines up the cups about 3/4 full of coffee and pours the whiskey over the whole row in one tip of the bottle; then the cream goes in and the coffees go out - sounds like 5stats is quite familiar with the place already! and that's a riot getting popped for boarding down Lombard!! that's hilarious - you go stat!

I'm thinking one of the guys who makes them as been doing it for like a 1000 yrs!

I would definitely NOT have the balls to skate that street!

BTW, altho they only have a few theaters - I did see Bette Midler there and the travelling Chorus Line - many years ago BTW, and in 89, saw this artsy fartsy drama that I nearly fell asleep on. And finally, the only live version I have ever seen of a Christmas Carol - in SF theater.

Great city - I highly recommend it - earthquakes notwithstanding
