Kennedy Half Error?

I picked up some half dollars and among the batch I got a few dated 1971, but on the front of one of the coins there seems to be scratches. Could this be an error coin or someone just taking out their frustration?

    It looks like damage.

Usually this forum is reserved for talk about world (foreign) coins. If you click the drop down "navigation" window above there will be a link to the "US Coin Forum" which would be more approprite for these threads.

I believe the members of this Forum were WAY too quick to dismiss your question as not appropriate for the World coin forum, as what you posted here is INDEED an error!

Apparently, the Cook Islands Mint made a WHOPPER of a mistake in stamping out the image and verbiage of what would APPEAR to be a U.S. half dollar on the planchet intended for their "Turtle" 50-Tene piece, KM #41 !

What you have there is a TRUE RARITY whose value at auction I could not even BEGIN to estimate!!!

I have what was previously thought to be the only example in existence, but with a "D" mintmark, and without any scratches - - any offers from Forum members?!

  • Dave, thank you so much for this information. This news is really exciting being that I am brand new to collecting.
Any suggestions on what I should do from here with this coin. Thanks again Dave.

I'm at a total loss here to understand either the referenced coin or the point of DBStrader2's post
but am pretty confident that he's pulling your leg.

Don't get your hopes too high here.

    Tom:

Yes, I was trying to be humorous (see the wink icon at the end of my post) - - hope I didn't get your hopes up too high........ I just whipped-out my Krause and leafed thru it until I found something the same size, etc to use ........

Seriously, no value there, either Darkside or U.S.

But stick around here and read & learn - you could very well find out some very interesting stuff which could guide your collecting pursuits for years to come! That's what I did, and it's led me to lots of great contacts and directions in my collecting!
