Has anyone recently upgraded a five figure coin they bought at a Heritage auction at PCGS

I know they screen the consignment coins for possible upgrades but wondered if they miss anything ?

Is the same true at Bowers and Merena as they will begin auctioning the Ann-Kate collection of coins at Baltimore and then in Denver in August.

I don't see no five figure coins 'round here...

    Stewie,

Not recently. But up to 2002, I regularly was able to cross NGC 65 and 66's bought from Heritage, and then resubmitted to PCGS for cross. Some less than 5 figure, some more.

I know that they sure try, before putting out a large upper end set for auction. As does ANR.

I truly cannot remember crossing a NGC 67, or upgrading a PCGS 66, that had an original cost of more than 5 figures, since 2004. That would include auction buys from Heritage, or any other sources.

But then again, I have not tried many.

I believe that he is saying that the screeners at HNAI are really good and do their very best not to leave any money on the table.

I would say that they may indeed provide this service to retail customers that consign their coins early. Dealers that consign their coins with little lead time probably do not get the same service.

No, not from an ANR or Heritage sale. I have had more success getting fresh early pieces from other venues. As I agree with above statements I think Heritage and others really screen them pretty well for upgrade potential as least for the better/large cosingments. The last coins as a whole that I saw in person where they were left intact and sold as is was that Gold Rush gallery Collection cosignment Jan 05 signature Ft Lauderdale FUN. Those pieces were trully awsome in thier original PCGS OGH holders. After viewing those coins in person, one could really see the direction the grading services went over the past few years with grade flation.

Thanks,I believe Julian hit the nail on the head.

J Dimmick - The Gold Rush Consignment sold at the FUN 2005 was a late consignment and there was no time to submit the coins.

It seems to me that it is harder now than ever to get a coin in auction that is a lock upgrade. In fact it is almost impossible !

Bruce's illustration above is very imformative. I actually like the coin better as a MS-65 in Heritage, vs. the MS-66 at Bowers & Merena. Maybe it was the photography, but maybe the coin had been played with a little.

Regardless, the prices realized are in dramatic agreement.

    Great research, Bruce!!!!

Looks the question has been answered. All I know is I am the kiss of death in upgrading any coin, including big ones. They upgrade before they get to me, and then upgrade after I turn them loose. I have to just buy the coin for itself and let the holder say what it says.

    Julian,
The B&M auction is not a final price. The auction closes next week.

    Stewart:

This is another one of you questions that you are dreaming for a different answer than you would expect. DEALERS would have already tried to upgrade BEFORE auction submission. Heritage as a service to get more consignment will AUTOMATICALLY try to upgrade for their client, in hopes one hits, and then the customer will feel Heritage will get them the most for their consignment. It is SOOO common sense, Stewart.

So that is why I see so many PCGS coins in new PCGS holders on Heritage image

To answer your question - yes, the largest number of upgrades I've gotten by far has been from Bowers and Merena Auctions. Unless it's a last minute sale, your chances with Heritage are virtually nil--and the ANR coins are so closely watched and competively bid--the TPG grades almost seem to be ignored.

On coins I've consigned to Heritage in the past few years they batted ZERO for me. Didn't matter though as the coins brought strong money for what they were. One coin they considered a lock NGC upgrade did not even cross at the lower grade. But it brought next grade money in any event. Part of the problem was that they only had time to try the coins once with the auction date approaching. So in some cases it's more than they just did "not work." And every new time is a crap shoot.

On a 2nd occasion with Heritage I sent them a select grouping of a dozen or so, very original, gem NGC bust/seated coins. Heritage's graders agreed with me that the majority should cross or upgrade.
Well, only 1 of 12 even crossed. Just goes to show that there is a lot more to the game than just trying (especially once). Between
Heritage and myself, my record for NGC crosses at PCGS is 1 of 36.
On PCGS regrades my record is 100% on upgrades (just the opposite). I've yet to have one PCGS coin come back the same grade that was sent back for regrade. Obviously this is proof that I can only grade coins accurately through PCGS plastic. NGC plastic must have difference light refractance.

I will continue to strive and match SB's record (LOL).

I, indeed, did miss the fact that the B/M auction hasn't closed yet, so we will have to see what the final price will be.

Regardless, the coin looked better to me pre-regrading on the web site. I will try and look at it in Balt.

I looked at this coin in Baltimore and it looked better in person than on the web site. It realized $20700, which is more than it realized at HNAI, as a 65 last year.
