Switched Swatches

I just read at the Topps board and apparently they are/were ? discussing it at Beckett (but the page wont load for me)

A guy had a Torii Hunter jersey card and his son dropped it. So he pulled out the jersey swatch. The swatch said Manny Ramirez on the card and on the paper stuck to the swatch. Apparently another collector opened up a deflector card and it had paper inside with a players name. Maybe the company was using extra stock or it was a switched swatch on accident.

Thoughts?

  • This is one of the reasons that all of these logo patches are worthless. Too many shady people were taking out "plain" one color swatches and putting in patches from store jerseys that have 5 or 6 colors or parts of a logo and getting hundreds of dollars for a 3.00 card. If you build it, people will scam it.....

That is the most disgusting thing I have read all day. Pretty soon,
nobody will want to buy anything at all.

  • I never thought about that. I am bidding on a "tag" card for my boys collection and it is a reguar BDP jersey card and it could possibly be fake !!! Scary/Sad. I used to have some jersey cards that had wrong colors, I sold em for a buck or so and I pulled from packs myself. I wish I still had them. I'd open 'em.

This has been going on for years....without a very discriminating eye, you can't even tell the difference. people buy cheap jerseys and just slice them up, then they take all the single color swatches out and make them 2/3/4 color swatches. Most the time they'll make obvious goofs like putting swatches with logos into a card, when that particular logo wasn't even created until years after the card was made. The stories go on forever.

  • I first heard of this being done to the SPX Ichiro RC when "multi-color patches" commanded huge bucks. I believe beckett had a warning about it.

I've also heard of people changing the number of hand numbered cards. i.e. someone renumbers a pujols rc from 135/500 to something that will fetch a premium (005/500 - his jersey number).

  • yep this is something I've heard for a while now. IF I buy a gu'ed patch card(I like to get them auto'ed by players) I make sure it's marked as such on the reverse. Now yes that won't take all the possibility of scamming out of it but a lot of it.
