2005 D SF MS68FB Prices dropping.

I have been tracking these since they first came out looking for one to buy and stick in my 2005 mint set. The few I found at first were too expensive or few and far between. I have noticed several on ebay lately and the prices are dropping quite a bit.

A year ago you couldn't find one for less than $100. I found around 4 or so on ebay this week alone. The one I found on ebay today was at a bid of $50. I put a bid in and won it for only $51. I see also that the pop reports have continued to increase on these. Currently around 85/2 in 68fb.

Where are all these new ones coming from. I looked back at my october 2005 pop report to find the pop then at 23/2. This is no doubt good news for all of us still missing this coin and bad news for the ones who had it already.

What are the thoughts from our roosie fans?

Someone was holding out on us. I picked one up on ebay a while back for a bit over $50. The guy sent me two by accident, so I asked if he would give it to me for $50, he said yes so I cut him a check for the second coin.

I am a world coin collector, but somehow it doesn't seem surprising to me that the population of any 2005 coin in MS-68 might increase dramatically in the first couple of years after they were minted. Not trying to be a wiseass, but am I missing something?

  • Well typically something that has been that hard to make early on doesn't increase by 3 fold within a year. Yes the pop reports get crazy the first couple of years of a coinage and for modern stuff really continue to increase for most items.

What suprises me is the fact that these have been so rare and elusive and now they are falling from the skies. Perhaps we had a person hoarding and cornering the market with these!

I collect and build mainly mint sets so I don't stick to one coin but to year sets. I can name several coins in the last couple of years that have also been elusive and have pops that have not increase much if any over the past couple of years. The 2004 P ms68 florida was a pop 42/0 in oct 2005 and now is 47/0 as of today. The 2004 P texas was also fairly elusive and had a pop of 91/0 in oct 2005 and now is 92/0. Of course that is kinda not fair as I don't have all of my pop reports to look at the whole story.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that it seemed early on that this would be one of the "rare" coins to find in high grade. Now the pops have been rising rapidly and it looks as if this coin no longer will fit that category. But for every one that doesn't, there are some that do. I am so pleased with my 2004 mint set and wish I would have finished it then since finding the some of the coins I need is only getting tougher and more expensive.

Now for 2006, I plan on finding and submitting my own coins in an attempt to enjoy and learn more about each series and year.

With most new coins that come out, the pops tend to go up, and up, and up. The Roosevelt dimes are usually neglected as a coin, and usually they go up slowly.

Pops on 1999-2003-P/D MS68FB's have been virtually "Frozen" for a long time. Sometimes its hard to decide when to "Buy" vs. "Waiting" longer for them.

And if they had not been forced into the circulation sets, they would not have cost as much as they did.
This was strickly a business decision, and we all know it.
We all talk about this in IM's and email, but no one wants to say whats what in the open.
That said, as a business decision it was a good one. But for the set builders it sucked, go back and read how many people said so in the BIG thread.

Geez. Could it be that they were minted ONLY A YEAR AGO, and that they can be found in change. $50 for a year old coin they minted a billion of. I am in the wrong business...
