Anyone Have Any Luck Pulling Cards From 1993 SP Football Wax

I also am buying 95 and 96 SP wax boxes. I thought I might have some luck with pulling 9's and 10's from these boxes.

I have had a rough time trying to pull 94 Playoff cards (specifically the Larry Allen rookie) as these cards tend to stick together for some reason.

Any stories out there?

Even when they were brand new, it was tough pulling mint cards from any of those SP boxes. The foil just chips too easily. As for the Playoff cards, lots of the UV-coated cards of that era have started sticking together in packs and boxes. There's not much you can do about it, although some have said putting the cards in the freezer will allow you to seperate them without damage.

  • i bought a box of 1996 SP football with hopes of getting a PSA 10 harrison or owens. I think I received pretty much all the rookies in that class(decent distribution). Unfortunately I received like 4 of the same scrub rookies and only 1 of the owens and harrison. Didn't grade the owens because it had a soft corner. Ended up sending in the Harrison and got a PSA 9 out of it. Those rookies are pretty tough to get in mint due to their red border. Good luck though!

I ripped the heck out of 93 SP for Bledsoe,Bettis,Hearst,Brunell(non foil card but his rookie) and Natrone Means . I also ripped 94 for Faulk,Dilfer,Rhett and Schuler but never received a mint grade from PSA. I was actually looking through some cards and came across a decent regular and die cut Mcginnest rookie? Any value there? Back to 93 I swear Natrone Means was a short print never pulled one and never saw much of any for sale at shows?

  • the boxes are tough....if they have been schlepped around from show to show or dealer to dealer out of a case...the cards tend to show wear. Also..even if buying a box online...if the shipper doesn't package them tightly...they can get dings.

All the SP is very condition sensitive....the problem is...if you don't pull the big rookies or a dynomite chase card....the rest of the box is a loss..

The good news...the mid 90's boxes can be had fairly cheap now.

I just ripped multiple 94, 95 and 96 SP Basketball.....like you...alot of the cards were sticky...
Out of 8 boxes...I think I only pulled 15-20 cards worth grading..

I ripped a box recently from BBCExchange. I sent in any semi, star or RC I thought had a shot at a 10 and these were my grades:

    5 06381960 1993 SP 15 TODD KELLY FOIL 10
    6 06381961 1993 SP 61 BERNIE KOSAR N/A 10
    7 06381962 1993 SP 66 MICHAEL IRVIN N/A 10
    8 06381963 1993 SP 95 STERLING SHARPE N/A 9
    9 06381964 1993 SP 100 MICHAEL BARROW N/A 10
    10 06381965 1993 SP 122 JOE MONTANA N/A 9
    11 06381966 1993 SP 241 DANA STUBBLEFIELD N/A 10
    12 06381967 1993 SP 259 JOHN LYNCH N/A 9
    19 06381983 1993 SP 123 WILL SHIELDS N/A 10

I pulled a Bledsoe and 2 Brunell's, but no Bettis. Hope this helps.

  • All those UV coated issues (Ultra, Stadium Club, etc) all have the same problem. The cards stick togehter in the pack and when you separate them, some of the card sticks to the other. Even if you put them in Cardsavers or pages in an album, the same thing happens. I've learned you have to insert the card into a pennysaver before putting it into a Cardsaver.

Of all the SP sets, the RC's in 95 and 96 are some of the toughest to grade. The 95's have the whole black border thing going on, while the 96 Rc's have the foil which also chips and wrinkles. 93 Sp is actually a bit easier to grade. The key in 93 to getting 10's, is to make sure the corners are sharp. After that check for surface scratches, and foil chipping. I've found if the card has 1 of these 3 aspects= PSA 8, 2 out 3= PSA 9.
Some of the later SP Authentic sets 2000 and up are easier to get 10's, but you have to check the card for slight service scratches, smudges, or indentations. Every submission that I received a "WTF a PSA 5???", is because of this. If anyone has any graded 93- present SP or SP Authentic cards (and I've noticed your auctions Leeimage), please email or PM me.
