Question regarding unopened packs

Question for folks who've had experience opening older material ('50s, '60s, '70s): Is there a consensus as to which packaging format (rack packs, cellos, wax packs) has yielded better condition cards? I'm mainly referring to corner and edge wear. Thanks in advance.

  • I only have opened a few 70's wax but my experiences in later years lead me to think racks are the best way to go,I think. Cello sometimes is too tight on corners and wax and gum stains on wax packs.

    Hi Guy

    First off - Welcome!

I don't believe in opening older wax - especially from the 60s - the cost vs. the return is just not there IMO.

For me, older packs are for collecting and kept unopened - preferably graded/sealed in plastic holder.

Now, the 70s - especially later 70s is worth opening.

I think most would say that the racks are the best buy.

My top two picks would be the Baseball Card Kid - Mark Murphy.

And the Baseball Card Exchange - Steve Hart.

Both are extremely honest and sell great products.

Good luck and may all your rips be good ones!

Steve Hart of bbcexchange is by far the most trustworthy of all dealers with regard to unopened material. His customer service is excellent, too. For 70s unopened, racks and wax are usually the best options for mint cards. Cellos are tougher because of the tight wrap and vending boxes are prone to dings and are easily searched. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the great replies. When I bust something I'll post the results.
  • I would stay far away from kruk cards they have a lot of stuff but its a lot of junk
1st strike i bought four 82 fleer vending cases box a b c and d should have yielded 3 complete sets all boxes were searched best card was a henderson and only 1 of those. refund yeah right they offered 16 off my next purchase. 120 down the drain

2nd was suppose to be a sealed case of 89 fleer baseball i even called to make sure it was sealed and they told me it was. showed up opened and remeber the number system on 89s well the whole case had been cherry picked. said they would refund minus the shipping but i had to pay to ship it back .
225 case lose 50 on shipping and pay another 50 to send it back. Yeah i got stuck with more junk.

Last straw bought a lot of 500 miswraped 84 topps packs. Case shows up half the packs had been chewed on and some nice rat droppings were left in the bottom of box another 200 down the drain.

It was an expensive lesson to learn. Since I have bought 1000's of dollars of wax and racks from steve hart at bbcexchange and have gotten nothin but gold also got good stuff from mark murphy but he is a little pricey.

So theres my opinion take it at what you will. I would just becarefull of kruk or as I now them crook kards
