Miswraps

I'm not familiar with miswraps - can someone who is explain what they are? Also, assuming they're purchased from a reputable dealer, are miswraps any less likely to contain star/rookie cards than "normal" packaging? Finally, are the potential grades of cards in miswraps likely to be worse than the same cards from wax/racks, etc.? Thanks.

Miswrapped packs are those that were removed from the final packaging process due to inconsistencies with the number of cards, pieces of gum or insert cards in the pack. There may also be wrappers that were misaligned in the cutting process (kind of like an MC card) and the occasional double wrapped pack.

I learned this recently when i won a lot of 500+ miswrapped '86 Topps BB packs on eBay. I got the cards cheap but i got the feeling that some of the packs had been searched as several dozen were not sealed. I noticed that some of the packs were almost identical in content even though they were stacked on top of one another. I also got more than my fair share of Pete Vuckovich's card so i can wallpaper a part of my house and have several images of his mullet-topped face staring back at me. I got the packs recently so i haven't had a chance to tally up # of cards for each key player in the set. Offhand, i'd say I got more Ryans that I expected but there seem to be fewer Clemens than i'd expect to find if a random mix of 500+ packs.

In terms of card quality, in the case of '86 Topps BB, it is a total crap shoot as far as if you get mediocre to crappy quality cards with what you're busting whether it's wax, cello or racks. The black bordered top edge chips so easily that you can get hosed with just about any type of packaging. The only one i haven't tried yet is vending which i think would be a total waste of time and money.

For peace of mind that what you're buying hasn't been searched, i recommend buying a sealed case rather than an oddlot of miswrapped packs. It may not work out to be as cheap on per card basis but you won't have to wonder about the mix of cards you get in the end.
