Schmidt rookie card pricing and the SMR

I know there are quite a few collectors of sets from the 70's on this board. I usually do not track cards from the 70's but I thought I would check Smart Collector for this card. Below are the sales of some Mike Schmidt rookies on ebay in the last 6 months

SMR seems way off on the price of a 9 considering 9's have sold for between $846 and $999. SMR seems a little high on 8's considering the last three to sell have sold in the $200 range.

Without tracking these cards my main question is: Are most 1970 Hall of Fame rookie and star baseball cards overpriced in the SMR?

    And most 1960's HOF rookie cards are underpriced in SMR. SMR on a Sutton is $475 and the last 3 or 4 have topped $900.

    Whats odd to me is that one of the main influences on price is population which PSA seems to
    completely ignore in the SMR.

    Its a glorified Beckett for graded cards. Strange.

    SMR is only a guide and one that I feel is pretty much dead on in most cases. Sure there are exceptions, but overall it is accurate and by far the best one available.

    you are correct on the sutton. i know you have active buying and selling them. that card has a 9 pop of 16 plus a 10. still draws a lot of interest.

    smr is usually off on high graded items (which is likely a function of the registry, much to PSA's delight) and in most pre war cards. sometimes it's off on high demand cards (like HOF rookies, for instance Hank Aaron's 1954 topps). it's pretty good with mid grade up to 7 cards in the 50's and 60's.

    Has anyone used smart collector? I just checked it and search 1961 Mantles and only a few showed up. What gives? It doesn't sound right.

    FWIW - there seems to be many more Schmidt PSA 9s rookies floating on Ebay in the last few months than historically. The population has not risen dramatically - but Ebay has been popping Schmidt PSA 9 rookies at about the rate of one per three weeks, mas o menos, over the last year. I think this supply surge has depressed prices pretty much, at least in the short term.

    You're not kidding Marc. Schmidt 9's are a dime a dozen these days. It's crazy. I, of course, bought mine right before this whole surge started for hundreds more than they're selling for now image

    Not really sure where they are coming from. I mean, on one hand, there are 89 of them. But the population has not had a huge surge in new Schmidt 9s out there. And I think this has always been considered one of the blue-chip cards in top condition from the 1970s to have in a collection. Now might be a good buying time, who knows?
