Stats On PCGS Grading Of Canadian Vicky Cents

I try to keep track of how PCGS grades my favorite series, Canadian Victorian cents. To do so, one has to methodically go through the population report, one coin number at a time, since the PCGS website does not have population spreadsheets like they do for liteside coins. The bar chart below shows how they graded the 1,796 coins submitted prior to September 24, 2005. Like for many series, most of the early submissions were mint state coins.

The next bar chart shows how they graded the 201 coins submitted between September 24, 2005 and today - July 4, 2006. A few numbers and thoughts here:

1. The vast majority (128 out of the 201 coins) of recent submissions were graded 62-63-64. Question - Does this mean there are very few 65 and 66 coins out there that have not previously been graded by PCGS, or does it show that PCGS has graded coins much more critically lately? Based on the charts, and my own submission experiences, I think it is a combination of both factors. Notice the leftward shift between the two charts.
2. Only 9 of the recent submissions were graded as MS-65 (all colors - Red, RB, or Brown). Only one was graded as MS-66 (a sole 1876-H RB).
3. Only 11 of the 201 recent submissions were graded as "Red". Only 5 of those were MS-65 Red. No coins were graded MS-66 Red.
4. Collectors are now submitting more key date coins in less than mint state. 51 of the 201 recent submissions graded less than MS-60. Of these 6 were 1858, 6 were W9/8, 2 were DP#1, 3 were DP#2, 19 were one of the 1891 varieties.

I know several contributors here collect Vicky cents, so I hope this helps. Form your own conclusions.

Bosox - I have found that I get better grades when I submit Canadian coins at a major US show where there is on-site grading. It cost more but I feel it is worth it.

Interesting bar graph Rob. Is PCGS getting more conservative on the Vicky cents? I think so.

    Interesting charts Rob.

IMHO, PCGS has been brutal (ultra conservative) on all Canadian Coppers. And especially so on crossover attempts.

I have to go back and check my records but I believe the only two coppers that crossed for me in the last year were both 1947ML small cents at 65RD (ex-ANACS / ICCS). All of my purchases from the Edmonton, Feb TOREX, and TNS shows did not cross (ICCS / CCCS / NGC / ICG).

I've got eight on vacation out west that I cracked from RED holders. Due back in August.

Checked my records 3 of 9 coppers crossed: the 2 1947 small cents and a 1859 N9 in 63RB (ex NGC).
