Modern Collector Question

I only purchased Heritage this year...

What are your favorite releases so far this year?

Over the past few years - my favorite packs - Bowman, B Chrome and B Heritage, for a complete set Heritage. Base brand - Topps.

I pretty much stopped buying UD and now Donruss is gone along with Leaf, Fleer etc.

I have calmed way down in buying modern, as compared to the last few years...losing over 2 grand on a case of second year Exquisite basketball really cured me of the need to "rip something". I don't buy cases anymore, just boxes of Bowman Chrome baseball and football, SP Authentic football and basketball, Playoff Contenders football, and maybe All-Time Fan Favorites Baseball (a box or two is all you need).

  • I hate to say it, but I am really enjoying the basic Topps issue this year in rack pack form. I can't get enough of the 3 vintage cards they stuff in each rack.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

what vintage are they putting in???
  • okay, I should have put vintage in quotes. Oldest I've gotten is '78. Have gotten a bunch of 83 and 84 traded though. And occasionally a Reggie or Mattingly from the mid 80's

  • I more or less have stopped buying wax becuase I have not found a decent product that offers a good bang for the buck that also provides non bandaid autographs. I spent much of the time I would have spent on busting wax on looking for autographs from 2001 Fleer Greats of the Game autographs. I have officially completed the set minus the Stargell card which he didn't get around to signing before his death.

I have stuck with Heritage...big reason is the non bandaid autos. I am also hoping to see Fan Favorites back too for the same reason and those great photos! I love ripping those and finding the awesome autos they put in there. Last year, my first auto from that product was Dave Winfield on the 1979 style card. I do regular issue of Topps because I always have. Other than that I usually leave the rest alone unless I get a major itch to rip.
  • I think we need to make the term "classic" a catchphrase for cards that are not quite vintage but probably almost at least 20 years old. If it works for cars, then why not cards?

There hasn't been very much excitement for me this year between the loss of Donruss and the limitation on the number of sets that can be made. I have only opened a handful of Bowman packs, no boxes. I was actually pretty disappointed with Heritage. The photos were too washed out. Not that the originals were all technicolor, but I think they went too far the other direction, and it threw me. I've wanted this set for 5 years, though, so I'm sure I'll put it together eventually.

Triple Threads seems to be the biggest hit so far, given the way box prices have taken off, but what you get from any given box can be either very weak or awesome. I haven't opened any, but there are a lot of nice cards in that set. Seems like Topps Allen & Ginter is what people are waiting for. There is a lot of interest in the non-baseball autographs and there will be tons of people building the master set. Bowman Chrome, too, will be opened heavily, although there are already lots of complaints that the checklist of 1-per-box autograph "rookie" cards contains too many guys with cards in previous years, so the worst case might actually contain zero true autographed rookie cards. The confusion over the new RC rule continues, too, which put a damper on Bowman and Bowman Chrome. Topps Chrome could be interesting, being one series, but again, too few true rookie card autographs which drove the set the last couple years. Turkey Red will be back with what looks like a carbon copy of last year's set, continuing the numbering and everything, not even different colors for the parallels. SPx looks to be improved, or at least the double-sided jersey & patch inserts will be in demand.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Seraph,
The term "classic" does not refer to cars that are 20 years old. Classic cars are a very defined list of cars that were built from 1925 thru 1948. Below is a list of cars that are actually considered classic.
If you check out the link in my signoff you'll understand why I know this.

Also, I think it was you who collected Horse racing cards. The Car pictured on my website, was once Charlie Howards. (Seabiscuit)

    Thanx for your input Helio

I will not purchase anything this year and didn't even try to finish Heritage for the first time since it came out - that's kind of sad for me.

Hope funds are better next year since I like the 58 and 59T designs.

I'm not sure what you mean by confusion on the RC rule - it's pretty well spelled out.

Now if you mean "struggle" over it? Yes - for sure. A lot of people don't like it this way since it keeps Topps from listing all those "prospects" that people were grouping under the RC umbrella? Does that sound accurate?

Since sets are planned so far in advance - if they have to wait for a guy to be on the "roster" to print up the card...that can exclude a lot of guys - ya might have to wait till the next year?

All and all, if someone likes a particular card but it lacks the "official" RC logo - if there's a demand - people will throw a lot of money that way? That would be my take.

    What do ya think?
