Found my first eagle button!

Took a little stroll this afternoon, hunting the grass strips between the sidewalk and the street. Found $4.33 in clad and my first eagle button.
Not sure how old these are, but it has an eagle perched on an anchor and what looks like 3 cannon balls(?) stacked below it. Also 13 stars surround the circumferance. The back is toast with little chance of retreiving any info from it.

As many of you know , buttons are one of my favorite finds. This one put a big smile on my face!image

Sorry about the crappy pics.image I'll reimage after some cleaning.image

    Cool!
  • The image is similar to the shield-shaped pin I posted awhile back with the eagle holding the anchor and three dots below the eagle. LM might know the age on these thing.

    Cool find!

I tried to do some research for ya, but came up a little short. Only thing I could find that was close was this .

it looks like a modern button to me. i've dug many just like yours. loditom will know, he has all the button books. a older eagle button will look more like this one. i dug this some years ago, at a house site dating to the 1860's.

  • Thanks guys!

Yeah, I didn't think it was very old myself. I was thinking maybe 40 years old??
Glad I found it just the same. image

It might be older than you think. It's a Navy button, so it wouldn't look like the General Issue button demodigger posted.

My young friend Chris found an old Navy button back in January that is similar, though not identical in appearance. Linkie

I'll have to dig out my Albert book.

  • Very nice find GR and that is a Naval button.

I looked in my Albert's button book but couldn't find that specific design.Tryed to see which one's had an iron back but couldn't come up with anything.

If the back wasn't iron we could get a maker's mark and then be able to at least I.D. the age.
