John Day Dam is a hydroelectric dam spanning the Columbia River in the northwestern United States. The dam features a navigation lock plus fish ladders on both sides. The reservoir impounded by the dam is Lake Umatilla, and it runs 76.4 miles (123 kilometers) up the river channel to the foot of the McNary Dam.
John Day Dam is part of the Columbia River Basin system of dams.

Close is all I need and you were real close.....
MAD4MORGANS......Thanks for a little bit of history concerning the Columbia River Dams. This dam and The Dalles Dam wiped out some great scenery which can never be replaced. I guess back then the natural wonders of the area took back seat to progress.
Notice the open spillways on the Dam. We are water rich out here this year. The spillways have been open off and on for over two months now. The pictures were taken about 2 hours ago.
This Dam was built in the 60's. Three towns were re-located or partially re-located. Arlington, Boardman and Umatilla were the towns. One little town left the map completely. It was called Blalock. Now over the top of Blalock there is some fine Small Mouth Bass fishing.

<< <i>John Day Dam on the columbia by the town of hood river. >>
Hood River is west about 75 miles. You are in though.....
MAD4MORGANS said John Day but the town of John Day is atleast 150 miles south. He is in also in ....
Actually no towns with a population over 6000 are within 50 miles of the location of the flag. A town is not required but if someone can give me the name of the closest berg I will find something to send that person.

since close is relative and I have your clues, which don't help me a bit, and I want to enter you give-a-way, my answer is North America. To get even to get even closer, I'll say the United States of America..
Happy 4th, all.
