I have a number of sets I'm working on, thanks for asking. Here they are in no particular order:

122 T206's Trying to put together all the portraits first and after that go back and fill in the gaps. I found myself buying any T206 and I was all over the place. This way I'm more focused and am slowing down a bit.

1960 Topps Football, mid grade set, need 13 out of 132
1961 Topps Football, high grade set, prolly need 40 or so
1961 Topps Baseball, mid to high grade set, near half way complete
1964 Topps Football, Low grade set. I found this rummaging around at my mothers house 2 years ago. Every card is creased down the middle, like I had them in my back pocket. Need about 20, value not important.
1966 Topps Football. Another chidhood set. I have upgrade most, but this is a true mint set. Complete, but still improving
1966 Philly Football mid grade, need 60 or so.
1967 Philly Football, another childhood set, high to mint grade, complete exept for a few upgrades.

1963 Fleer Football PSA 7 and 8. I wanted a complete graded set so I picked this 89 card set. One of the nicest looking set ever made IMHO. I lack 5 cards from being complete.

I know most of these are not pre war, but I like to search e-bay and sometimes no T206's are to my liking so I can jump around a bit with these sets. All the sets except for the Fleer and T206's will remain raw and in albums. I often take out an album and look at the players from my youth.
I grew up in Buffalo and we didn't have a Major League Baseball team so football and the Bill's were my passion. It reflects in what I bought and saved as a kid. Sorry for the long wind.
BTW. This was my answer to the question on Net54 on a thread just days ago. I just copied and pasted.

My primary area of interest in terms of collecting is Topps Baseball All-Stars from 1975 thru 1981. I do collect other cards but this area would have to be my main focus.

I collect 1971 baseball and football, pirates and green bay packers. Some star cards, usually I can't afford the nice ones. Then anything else that I "just have to have".

Which reminds me, I gotta get off my butt and post my new items in the Mail Call thread. image

    Nice idea for a thread.

In the past year I have given up interest in many of my complete sets, but at one time had a very high grade 71 registered, and a few raw late 50's and 60's sets. It seemed too cumbersome for me to spend the effort on so many commons after a while.....began to lose interest.

My interests now include the following registry sets,

Thurman Munson Basic & master sets
    Don Mattingly master set
Ron Guidry basic & master set
    Graig Nettles master set
    Joe Torre master set
Lawrence Taylor basic & master set
Patrick Ewing basic & master set
1970 through 1979 Yankees team sets

    Also working on the following,

trying to put together raw cards from ever post war Yankee....will work on pre war occasionally if something good comes along.
Various signed Yankee items including world series signed balls from the 96-2000 run.
Vintage Yankee yearbooks and world series programs
Cards and memorabilia from the Knicks championship teams of the early 70's
Items from the 86 and 90 NY Giants super bowl teams.

  • Bri-I got a connection for tix. As you know the wait for season tix is roughly 35 years, but I work in remodeling/renovation and a client in Virginia saw me wearing my Giants hat(a young guy in his 30's) and turns out he has 4 season tickets. I have all his contact info and he doesn't get to go to many games do to work in the DC area. Definetly let me know.

    I'm currently not collecting.

Have made one purchase since November 1, 2005.

I do have three sets in the Registry: T3, T9 and 1963F BB.

    Other areas of interest:

    1. Baseball board games
    2. GU bats and jerseys
    3. Sports related whiskey decanters
    4. Hartlands, SLUs
    5. Autographed Sports Books, Pictures, Cards
    6. Topps pen and ink artwork from card backs
    7. Programs, periodicals, schedules
    8. WS Press Pins
    9. Stadium and Player pins

I have no idea where everything is or what I have for sure - I will know more over the next few months since I'm moving closer to an inventory, cataloging and storage.

My Goal: To have a really cool room at the house, a closet where I can actually find stuff and eventually decorate my office at work.

  • I also stopped my set collections in favor of player set, at 1 point I was #2 on the 1985 topps BB set but after re-thinking the 792 cards I began collecting Walter Payton and Joe Montana's basic set. I was in the high 20's on the 1973 topps BB registry also. I will start a set again just not that large of a set and I am 95% sure it will be football this time.

    Currently:

Joe Montana (Basic Topps) - #10 - Currently 50% complete with a GPA of 9.12 (3 in the mail not included all 9's)
Walter Payton (Basic) - #T14 - Currently 66.67% complete with a GPA of 9.05 (2 in the mail not included both 8's)

    Soon to Start:

1985 topps Chicago BEARS team set
    195? topps/bowman football

    Cool thread!

I am building a 1974 Topps baseball in PSA 8 or better at a snails pace. Only because I get side tracked from the other things I want.

I am also working on filling a roop box with HOFers from the 50s & 60s. The cards are all raw and in Card saver 1s. 1 more row to go and I will be done with that.

Also working on a mid grade basic Mantle collection.

I pretty much collect all baseball. It depends on what kind of mood Im in. Just the other day I was on ebay and bought a card from the 1940 Playball set for no reason but stupid self indulgence.

I guess my goal is to have 1 copy of every baseball card ever printed. image

That being said, I hate you for asking. I'm working on so many different sets now that when I see something new I almost always say "I don't need to start another set!"

    N & T non sports sets
    strip card sets
    Obaks
Diamond Stars, '50 Bowman, '53 Topps, '54 Bowman, '54 Red Heart, '56 Topps, '60 Leaf - and those are just the recent ones.

I guess I'm mainly a set collector. In baseball, I'm pretty active with T206's, E92 Dockmans and E93's, but I also try to pick up other caramel cards and some of the tougher T cards when I can. In hockey, I have '23-24 V145-1 set and have started anew on a '10-11 C56 set. I'm also thinking of starting another prewar hockey set, probably '24-25 Maple Crispettes or one of the '33-34 sets.

I'm desperately waiting for the grades to pop on my latest submission, which should put me within 1 card of finishing my 1979 Venorlandus set, currently at 79% (9.50 GPA).

    Also working on:
Mike Bossy Basic and Master sets (56%/9.19 GPA and 68%/9.03 GPA))
    1972 Topps hockey (32%/9.00 GPA)
    1981 Topps hockey (55%/9.27 GPA)
    1988 Esso NHL All-Stars (SGC graded - 42%/97.45)

I'm between relationships right now. I used to be in love with 1973 Topps baseball and have over a third of the set graded, but my ardor has cooled. I'm getting ready to unload most of them in order to splurge on the new apple of my eye -- 1978 Topps Football.

I'll hang onto to some of the tougher '73s I have and maybe slowly rebuild. Don't think I'm strong enough to let go completely.

I also have small and slow-growing collections of mid-grade 1951 Bowman baseball and high-grade 1959 Fleer Ted Williams.

Other sets I'm just aching to start are T206, 1953 Bowman baseball and 1965 Topps baseball, but I just don't have the dough to play that wide a field.

Edited to add: It feels good to talk about it.

It looks like I"m working on a bunch of sets, but on the sets I've completed and upgrading I often only pick up a card or 2 a year.

'06 NL Fan Craze- halfway thru
    T218 - upgrading
    T118- upgrading
'15 Cracker Jack- missing 1 card
T200- upgrading, but only a few possible
    '35 Goudey- need 1
'36 Goudey- upgrading, but everything I need is already in other registry sets
    '41 Goudey- halfway thru
    '41 Play Ball- upgrading
    '49 Leaf - upgrading
'49 Bowman- just started, 1/4 of the way thru. Fun working on a set that is easy to find, at least in the beginning.
    '52 Coke Tips- need 2
'58 Hires Test- need 4 with tabs. May be years on this one
'58 Bell Brand- need 1 upgrade
Unopened packs- need 4 Topps and 4 Bowman

The nice thing about working on multiple sets is you don't get stuck when there is a bidding war- the bad part is you have a bunch of unfinished sets!

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Graded cards from two sets: 1972 Topps football and 1967 Topps baseball. I'm under no illusion that I can complete either (the Mantle and that high series would kill me.)

I'm following the same plan for both: make a list of 75 or so stars, interesting minor stars and commons and pursue those in PSA 7 or (preferably) 8, and take it from there, if and when I reach that goal.

I have occasional detours (I have four pending eBay wins and only one of those is from either set), but I'm trying to narrow my main focus to those two. Just because I dig 'em both.

  • My problem has been that I like all types of cards (baseball, basketball and non-sports). In order to satisfy my need to work on complete sets, I have decided to work on one graded baseball set per decade. They are as follows:

    1888 N162

    1909 E95

    1910 E93

    1921 E121

    1933 Goudey

    1941 Play Ball

    1955 Topps

    1976 Topps

1979 Topps (one of the first sets I started working on as a child)

    1989 Upper Deck (raw)

1993/94 SP (mixed raw and graded)

    2001-06 Topps Heritage

I figure by collecting a set per decade I will have at least one card of most of the key players from baseball. In addition to the baseball sets, I am working on the following sets:

    1978-79 Basketball (graded)

    1964 Beatles (graded)

1977 Star Wars (and ESB and ROTJ) (raw)

1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark and 1984 Temple of Doom (raw) - I majored in Archeology in college and always enjoyed the Indiana Jones movies.

    Great thread!

I can't afford the types of things I used to collect any more which were:

    BASEBALL AND HOCKEY
Game Used Jerseys and Bats (the real things, not the pieces on the cards)
Autographs (tried to complete the entire BB HOF but had to sell of key pieces years ago)
    Topps Sets Baseball 1959, 1971, 1969 Hockey 1971-72
    Oakland A's
    Oakland/California Seals
    Japanese Baseball
    Memorabilia from the Wacky 1970s

Can't afford to pay $300+ for common GU items nor can I afford to replace some of the older vintage HOF autographs at today's going rate. These days I buy and sell stuff and rather enjoy having some of those items if even only briefly. Although I have had to sell a lot over the years, I still have some nice pieces including an extensive autograph collection.

  • interesting thread.

1.) im doing T206 portraits. slowly working my way to completing the entire set (minus, of course, the big 4).

2.) also doing HOF 51 bowman and the 05 bowman heritage set. the 51 HOF bowman set is on hiatus given the lack of money.

3.) bought two 1991 topps boxes recently. will try to complete that set and get all those cards auto'ed. big task, but should be fun.

4.) also doing HOF baseball rookies. this is a beast because of the money. people have advised me to get the tough ones first...but those babies cost quite a pretty penny.

5.) lastly, collecting misc greg maddux and hank aaron items. i also like collecting rookie cards of players i admired while growing up (frank thomas, griffey, etc).

basically, im actively doing 1, 2 (just the 05 heritage) and 3. I am semi active in 4 and 5. And 2 (51 bowman) is on hiatus.

I also collect baseball all stars from 75-81. I have completed 75, 76, 77, 79, and 81. I am almost there with my 1980's and have a ways to go on the 78's. I have recently branched out to collecting Football All Pro's, Basketball All Stars, and Hockey All Stars from the same years. That is looking to be a MUCH bigger challenge since, in the case of football, there are so many more All Pro cards. Also, for some of the years, the more obscure All Pro have only 1 or 2 total graded. Who wouldn't want to have a bunch of graded 1980 Toni Fritsch or Bob Grupp cards??

  • I'm working on every Frank Thomas RC (every card released from 1987-1990) in Gem Mint condition. Unfortunately I may never find hte NNOF in Gm-mt, but I'll settle for an 8. There's on on the Bay right now that I can't afford at the moment, but I'll have my chance. I've only got 7 or 8 more to find. There's a lot more than I realized when I initially decided to do this.
