David Copperfield tears and restores the Gretzky-McNall T206 Wagner

Torn and restored T206 Wagner

David Copperfield did this trick on one of his TV specials in the early 90's.

I hope PSA knows about those alterations, the collecting world will never be the same again image

Would you let Copperfield tear up any of your cards?

The king of all card doctors?

If in fact THE real card was any where near that trick, it probably went from a Mint 9 to a NM-MT 8 by all of the handling.

    My sets:

  • so now we know who trimmed it

remembering how thousands paid $2 a head to stand in line on a hot summer day in Anaheim just get a look at the real one

remembering how a few months prior i stood next to McNall at a card shop and watched him whip out a wad of bills fatter than my a** to make a purchase

with a trick more complex than anything Copperfield ever did, McNall turned a beautiful Armani 3-piece into an orange jumpsuitimage

I saw the card at the National in Atlanta in 1992 - I gotta say - it looked sweet!

  • Am I the only one here who has the sudden urge to punch Copperfield in his face?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I find this kind of stuff totally amazing and it always infuriates me that I can't figure out how they do it. But I'm a total sucker for 'magic'-- I'll admit it-- and have been for as long as I can remember.

    Boo

Here's a nice diagram of how something is "levitated" - they had some really good expose type shows a few years ago on a bunch of magic tricks.

Many pro's were really pissed off.

My dad had a few "travelling" illusion shows when I was a kid - he had one called the "Girl in the Fishbowl"
    people liked that one.

My dad was a travelling auctioneer but he really liked magic and what went on in the back end of a carnival show - me too!!!

T206 Honus Wagner in mint condition: Half a million dollars
Wayne Gretzky's signature: 100 dollars (well, maybe 99!)
The look on McNall's face when Wayne signs the card: priceless! image

I notice the card was not graded at that point. When did PSA slab it?

    McNall has had some life.

There's a book about his life, "Fun While it Lasted" and before his downfall, there were some great pieces in Vanity Fair and Esquire about his rise to the top. He went from boy wonder coin dealer as a kid to high end coins, antiquities, movies, race horses, the Kings. Literally Indiana Jones type stuff....buying smuggled antiquities in the back alleys of Europe.

This special was from 1993, wasn't it graded by then?

Guesses on how that was done? I'm thinking the creased up card to a new one was him palming them, one at a time, and dropping the messed up one down his sleeve (which is always pointed up after that).

And that's definately a repro card---more on the top of it, and more to the left.

Uh, yeah. It's not too hard to tear something in half and produce another one when there are a million others (ok, 999,999) to put up your sleeve.
