Well. I have sold all my common date Saints for personal reasons and retired my set.

It killed me to do it, but I had to do it. Good news is that 45% of the set was only 15% of the value of what's left.
But I have kept EVERY KEY and RARE coin! All the big guns are still onboard.

<< <i>What happens if someone tries to add one of the coins you sold to their set? Will that knock you down before you get to retire your set? >>
No one will add my #'s UNTIL I retire in a few weeks. It was part of the agreement. I have a few "tweaks" to do first. I will retire the set intact, as is allowed.
But, hey, when it's time to go, it's time to go. I hope it's nothing bad or serious, but something nice, like buying out your mortgage.
Warm regards,
Just Having Fun
<< <i>I actually thought of doing something similar....Keep the rarities and get rid of common dates...... >>
I've actually thought of doing just the opposite: keep the spectacular looking common dates and sell the rarities.
It appears your were able to find a new home(s) for all the common dates, without much ado(no dealers, auctions, consignments, delay).
That means great coins for the grade, in a series that is popular, at prices that are reasonable.
And you still have the rarities!
You might give a few dealers I know a seminar in marketing
JHF...sometimes you have to punt for reasons that are out of your control. This was one...I needed the liquidity and I'm not ashamed to say it. I went much further with my set than I ever imagined, and the "meat" is still intact.
I didn't even consider that I was making money on these, because I didn't want to sell them...but I did very well for common dates. I am certainly NOT done...although it may be a while before I reactivate. I still have a few upgrades in mind, but they are not that unreachable because I have the undergrade coin to finance most of the higher grade cost.
We also need to remind ourselves during the agony of selling that these coins are merely being rented by us...they will outlive our next 10 generations! They are gracing us with their brief stay in our posession.
I LOVE what I still have...and that's what matters.

If you will recall, I was a Barber Dime collector for 11 days. That's how our friend got his 1910-D MS67.

That's a jab, right? Too bad for you...because I have 90% of the RARITIES in MS64PQ or better. I sold the C O M M O N S. Capece?

I have followed that strategy since 1984. I abandoned the complete set strategy when the unavailability of the 1926-S lincoln cent in gem red broke my heart and was the true stopper in my completing my lincoln cent set in gem BU red condition (before the numeric grading system) and decided to just own the keys and save my monies for other keys.
On the mercury dimes for example, just the 1916-D, 1918-D, 1942/1, and 1945-P and just a few more common dates in FB gem+ satisfied my desires for enough completeness in the set.
I had long thought about including the 1926-S 10c in my partial set but had to draw the line somewhere!!! Now that date just rose in value from $35K to $50K in MS-67FB on the PCGS price listing this week ! But we can't do everything!
Fortunately in the liberty walking half dollar set, the Jack Lee 1921-P walker in PCGS MS-66 has held the line for me as well. Oooooh, would I love to reassemble a complete set of those walkers again!!! But fortunately, that was the one coin in his entire set that "sated" my appetite for too much more.
Doing all of the common dates as an alternative would have cost me as much or more than the one walker I always wanted!
<< <i>Jay, congrats on assembling a great set of Saints. Whats next, Ikes, SBA's? >>
Hmmm ... thought he might try to liberate some of those gold Sac Bucks that went up on the space shuttle ...

TDN, does that mean you will be swapping some of the GREAT coins?

I can see that a fellow of your prodigeous energy wouldn't like to stand still, however. Good luck in the next venture, and keep us posted!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Actually I DID make one irresistable move yesterday on the eve of my retirement of the set.
I was made an offer I just couldn't refuse, and I dug deep into my asset pocket to buy ONE more coin.
Might as well go down with the ship.
I bought a 1908-S MS66.....well, I did sell my MS65 for great $$, but does this EVER end?
And I can't even put it in my registry.
and they're cold.
