Here is a perfect example of a mis-labeled SF/MS coin

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,668 ✭✭✭✭✭
The coin is easily a Satin Finish coin in a Mint State holder!

2005-D Roosie

Your to tell me that PCGS cannot tell the difference? I though at first it was a Proof coin mis-labeled.

I can't believe that no-one had any comment on this coin. It has Cameo devices on it and they call it a business strike.

  • With the lighting its really hard to tell, but it almost does look like a business strike to me.

    Hey Paul,

I'd have to agree with you on this one, most likely an SF coin. If you check the cert.#'s up and down from this coin you will find maybe 1 of every coin from 2005? Seems to be the same deal as the last coins that where pulled from a TT auction for PCGS review. After a PCGS review 6 of the 8 coins where changed into SF holders and 2 coins remained in NON-SF holders!!!! I may have a chance to review one of the 2 coins PCGS did not change into a SF holder, image

Wonder if any of the other coins from this submission hit TT? Here's one coin a few cert.#'s up:

    Cert Verification #: 10553988
    Date, mintmark: 2005-D
    Denomination: 1C
    Variety: N/A
    Pedigree:
Country: The United States of America
    Grade: MS69RD

    Not SF?????

I am undecided on the Roosie in question. I think it looks like a SMS coin from the 65-67 era.
But to me it looks more BS strike in the fields, and proof like with the cameo devices.
I think this is one coin that would need to be in hand to tell for sure.

<< <i>proof like with the cameo devices. >>

Typical of the D Roosevelt dimes in the 2005 Satin Finish mint sets.

Dan, I can send out an example if you would like to see one in the mint cello? Just PM me image

When will the 2006 SF'S start showing up on ebay???? I want a 69 no bands of both P & D.

Looks like a business strike to me. Very early die state roosies often come with cameo devices. They are great coins to behold.

By definition such a coin could not exisit, IMO. MS69 should be fully struck, and therefore have full bands - "full detail - as intended". Am I missing something?

I guess you are missing something clakamas, I have both of the 2005's in SF 69 NO BANDS. They are also listed in the PCGS price list with and without bands.

    Jon
  • the mint says they will have them for sale on the 18th
so it should not be long after that

I have no doubt that PCGS has graded them but what I am saying is that they are overgraded simply because they should not be MS69 w/o full bands. MS68 or lower, regardless of how perfect the surfaces are, so I wonder why someone would want one. I guess the "near" full strike" would be the rationalization for grading MS69.

"MS/PR-69 Virtually as struck with minuscule imperfections, near full strike necessary "
